| Successive generations of Cretans had long fought and resisted occupations by other nations - Venetians, Turks, Egyptians - before the Greek flag was finally raised on the Fortress on the western end of the Venetian harbour at Chania on 1st December, 1913 in the Presence of King Contantine of Greece and prime minister El-Venizelos - the latter himself a Cretan from Theriso - Nomos Chanion. |
