JANUARY WEATHER ..... Cold. Wet. Windy. Stormy. Absolutely miserable, keep your head down weather. Except for those few beautiful sunny mornings with clear blue skies and temperatures reaching late 20C - early 30C on protected balconies... Late January was becoming early spring!

Astratigos Village Life - A place in the sun! Story below..

See picture panel - center below.

Astratigos Village Life.... Getting some..
We first arrived here in Astratigos in the late 80's, about 21 years ago - almost unbelievable when we think back now.

The house we bought here was a Venetian ruin. Perhaps a better  way to put that was a ruin with a few surviving Venetian bits - which would have looked good had they been better! Tucked away up a rough cement surfaced track from the village plateia, running between close-set village houses. That we had arrived at all seemed like a miracle - or a nightmare, depending upon one's personal outlook at the time..

The Miracle was finding the house in the first place. No TV programmes ('A place in the Sun' - or anywhere else!) to show us what was available. No, we found our 'place in the sun' long before that. When we first arrived all those years ago almost nothing was available. Oh, there were plenty of empty houses. Many in ruins. But nothing seemed to be for sale. But then, wanting something I couldn't have had always been my forte... When I was attempting to grow up my mother's considered opinion was that I was something of a connoisseur in that department! Being told nothing was available simply caused me to try to find it - something available that is!

Cretan families, we were told, kept their property to hand down within their families - even when it was falling into disrepair and ruin, which the one we eventually bought most certainly was, no holds barred. Hardly any holds at all in reality - not sticking together anyway.. It was already falling down.

But the dream lingered, from the day we had first met Cretan people, eaten their food and shared their hospitality, there was no turning back. I wanted one! But how to get one...

Being already married with a family, and not being of a religious conviction which would allow the acquisition of further wives, there was no way I could acquire another wife who could make me a born again Cretan. I settled for a house... Besides, my wife was on my side - we would buy a place for our retirement. Sheep, donkeys, goats, Cretan people, Cretan food, Cretan wine, Cretan life in the sun. Feta cheese and olives! Little did we know....

First, the house. Having spent three holidays searching, and becoming increasingly enamored the further from 'civilisation' we got, we got precisely nowhere! A blank! We eventually asked Kate Secker, who ran (still does) the holiday villas we used on Crete. Through Kate we found our (derelict) villa.. All we had to do now was to buy it. Our dream had begun. Or so we thought..
But first we had to see it - out in the wilds of Astratigos, the base of the Rodopos Peninsula.

In truth we nearly didn't even get that far. Once off the
coast road we had to climb the unfenced, pot-holed, in-name only road that led first precariously along the shoreline, sometimes 200 feet or so below, twisting up from Kolimbari to Afrata. The views were spectacular - especially those straight down into the sea on the blind bends. Driving on the right gave me an excellent view! After reaching the Afrata Village boundary on the road to Astratigos even the tarmac stopped.. It became a wide twisting rutted track whose loose gravel surface was brushing the door sills of our rented car!

We were wondering if we should see someone - maybe air-sea rescue - or a psychiatrist perhaps, to get another opinion...

About
£20.000 to buy - maybe another £20.000 to create our dream, Kate's contact had said. We could probably get private psychiatric treatment for less than that - being in the game I could probably get a discount!

Twenty grand (in 1991) for a ruin 2500 miles or so away across Europe, on an island which was still the front-line of that continent, where the military commander would have to give us permission to buy... And another twenty grand to create our dream. In a village with no shops, no tavernas, only a few people and even less habitable dwellings - and with absolutely no possibility of  ever taking our bags without leaving our cash behind because of currency restrictions....

We found Astratigos at the end of the track- more difficult then, before a small church was built in the square, when that area looked more like a patch of rough grass. We found the agent, which is another story entirely.
We saw several ruins we didn't want, and then the house in question - which we decidedly did want, ruin or no...

But before the dream, the people. If they didn't want us there we had resolved at the very beginning to leave. To forget it.. Now to meet some of them... Let the dream, or nightmare, commence...             (Continued next month..)

In the News.
Chania bombers sought...

But burglars caught...
After a spate of more than 30 robberies by three Chania men, all in their twenties, in Nomos Iraklion over the preceding two months, police finally caught their men..

But in Agia Marina....

Demonstrating farmers, however, were...
Totally unmoved in their position on poor prices for their products. National Roads were blocked and Iraklion Airport cancelled 20 flights as farmers invaded the runways.

Escalation of the action by farmers...
Occurred when they rejected a proposed 500 Million euro aid package.. The demonstrations covered the whole of Greece.

But then, almost a breakthrough...
Some farmers accepted the deal, but then an EU spanner landed in the works and some farmers, including those on Crete, continued protests and blockades which seem set to continue into February..

Child 'Pornsters', however, are not safe...
As Chania police made clear by commencing the questioning of a 29 year old photographer suspected of being involved in the production of child pornography..

Likewise - a crackdown in Athens...
Resulted in a number of people appearing in court, being remanded and being sought in connection with child pornography investigations.
                                (item 2) Link to Story.

And in the likeness of Robin Hood...
In what is becoming something of a fad across Greece, including Crete, young people raided an open supermarket in Iraklion, stealing goods which they gave to passers by!

Whilst others continue...
What seems to have become a somewhat common pastime - driving their cars and passengers into harbours accidentally. This one ended well... Some don't...

According to a ballistics report...
Alexis Grigoropoulos was killed by the ricochet of the police bullet which ended his life...

Earthquakes are a common feature of life in Greece and it is unusual for deaths, injuries and or damage to buildings to occur.

Recent comment has centered upon reassuring that whilst another Athens (1999) 'quake is unlikely, a Tsunami caused by a 'quake occurs every 136 years.

However, scientists have recently suggested that Greece should assess its Tsunami readiness Link to story. A Tsunami warning system is estimated to be ready by 2011 Link to story.

States in the Balkan region are now cooperating in sharing information.

A Little Extra News....
This is the bit I usually, as editor, look forward to. My chance to sound off.  But January produced a veritable maelstrom of news. Far to varied to find a single theme more worthy than all the others. My roundup this time was, to say the least, challenging.

As in most countries of the western world the year was heralded in by fireworks. In Greece it was starting as it meant to proceed. As far as January was concerned - it most certainly did. Fireworks; all round trouble; civil unrest; enough to cause the government to vow that it would maintain order Link. And that was only as far as the 13th..

Not surprising since the liturgy of problems included arson attacks on banks and businesses during the festivities; protests in Athens relating to immigrant populations; fire at a Patras Immigrant camp which raised comment from Medicins sans Frontiers - who provide medical treatment to the immigrants; riots in an Athens district - which followed protests against the felling of trees in a park by municipal authorities.  And that wasn't the end by any means - A relatively recent arrival on the media scene, a terrorist group called 'Revolutionary Struggle' claimed responsibility for serious attacks carried out since October 2008. At least the police officer critically injured in one attack is now recovering Link. (item two).

But road deaths continue and incursions into Greek airspace by Turkish jets may not help either..... Link.

Kalos Ithate stin Kriti - just don't forget your brolley!!

Site News: Some Changes this month...
We are still undertaking our major upgrade of the entire site. Changes in life here have left some pages outdated - new houses; hotels; supermarkets; roads and all.  But it all takes time, please bear with us.

Photo Galleries...
Calendar Photo Galleries:
A new one every year for the past decade! The 2009 Calendar gallery is complete and online now.. The 2008 calendar topic was 'Wild Flowers of Crete' and the result was superb!  Which is why we followed up the theme in 2009. Sorry, there are no calendars left..... Because of our success we have already produced our 2010 wild flower calendar (and our other themes continue). But we can reprint any issue with next year's dates - whatever year that happens to be! Link.

Wild Flower Gallery - Now at 288 different wild flower photographs - plus dozens in preparation... We have now added more reference information on redesigned pages - with more photos of each specimen to follow. All the information will remain online at Cretanvista. With the advent of ipods, Blackberry's and other gizmos it will be much easier to take Cretan vista on your field trips - and all the information that goes with it.

Wildlife Gallery -
the first two pages - the first 48 unique photographs, including some rare specimens of the Cretan fauna. Some of is quite beautiful, some a bit scary/creepy, but all now add to our wildlife page and the ornithology gallery pages.  Always worth checking where you walk or sit before you do! Start here.

Chania Photo Gallery.
Our Chania photograph galleries commenced with a presentation from Klaus Dieter Thill, whose photographs of some old buildings in the area of the Venetian Harbour show a little of what we all sometimes miss. Have a look - it's worth it. Start here.

Miniature Chapels of Crete Gallery.
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a printed photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete, has now contributed the first page of his Chania on-line gallery.

Cretan Art and crafts - Weaving pages...
Weaving is in full swing and natural dyes are being made up and the photographs taken to add to this section. We will be adding our
pages on our new looms, equipment and new projects started as soon as we can. The weaving tends to take the time right now..

Our very first nature gallery...
Contributed by Anastasios Sakoulis, whose book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature is also on our site as a book review.  Anastasios contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery some time ago now. We will attach these to our bird-watching pages as soon as possible.

GENERAL: There are now 19 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis; our own wildlife gallery; the wild flowers; Chania; Mhlia (Milia) traditional village; etc.. etc... etc....

Our improvements continue apace. We sincerely hope that you notice little - apart from increased enjoyment and ease of use. Keep visiting - your presence is what make all worthwhile.

Bird Watchers Note - Paul Smith "Birdwatching".

Paul Smith - Bird watching page author. Still no success....

We have been working hard to fill the huge gap left by Paul Smith's death last year. There had had reason to believe that we had succeeded in our quest. Paul was a highly competent diarist -  attempting to find another expert to fill his spot is still, to say the least, a little daunting. We have yet to succeed....

Paul's diary will, however remain on-line - an incomparable record of bird watching in NW Crete, until we can find some way of filling this gap. Perhaps, if we can find suitable photographs with which to illustrate, we will publish to paper...

Can this be you..... or yours... or mine?..
This Month - Wilf B.
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be you?

Pireaus - awaiting ferry Ariadne on 02/09/2008
But that camper waiting to board - is it you?
(After attempting to park on my bonnet!)

Until next month, best wishes from here on Crete. WB
