FEBRUARY WEATHER ...
Predictably unpredictable.  But in the main very cold. Snow in many higher levels and making some roads difficult and some subject to landslides. Lots of water and good quality storms but a few nice days to enjoy the first flowers.     Latest Crete Weather Site Link.

New face at Cretanvista - Colin Turvey

Cretanvista has recently accepted a kind offer by Colin to supply us with bird-watching photographs.  We are already working on his first gallery which contains some very nice shots.  Have a preview -  PREVIEW SAMPLE - CLICK HERE

Village Life... "Don't wander away now"...
'
Well, there we go Judith.  The only thing we could possibly do now is to put you inside the suitcase and try to get you sent somewhere nice - like Afghanistan..!'  The reply was indecipherable and not to my advantage. Since we were about to deliver Judith to her UK bound charter flight at Daskala Yiannis Airport, (Chania), I was making the most of our seriously long term banter. It didn't matter a lot at the time - I was on my way to the airport and a seriously cool beer on a sweltering August day - I could almost taste the cool, cool beer... Nectar....

Judith, I should explain, is a very old friend of ours.  Strangely, she and I seem to have been at war forever - years in fact!  Perhaps because I know that one day I will become the winner, I should concede just a little and point out that when I say that Judith is a very old friend, I mean that we have been friends for a long time, not that she is very old.  For her age!

Anyway, advantage - me!  All I need to do now is to get her on a flight to Afghanistan or somewhere equally exotic - or perhaps have her still sat in the airport taverna at Chania as her flight departs for the UK (!)and it will be game, set and match.  Lets go...

It was easy.  Beautiful day.  Sunny Kolimbari sped by (on the way to my beer) as did Gerani, Platanias, Agia Marina and all points east to the airport.  Maybe Judith will buy the beer (another point to me maybe)..  We arrive before the tourist coaches bearing her compatriot end-of-holiday-makers and are first at the check in.  No problems.  A couple of hours to go - we can saunter across to the taverna (just outside the airport gates) and I can try for a free beer on Judith....

'Don't wander away now' - a half smiling female 'rep' - from some airline or other, appears to be guarding the doors as we attempt to leave the departure hall.  She doesn't seem to understand that I am not 'wandering away now' - I am going, as is my habit at the airport on a hot day, to the taverna for a cool, cool beer.

'Excuse me?'  I politely enquire into her apparent confusion... 'DON'T WANDER AWAY NOW - HE MAY GO WITHOUT YOU'...  Tone more serious now, smile very, very faint..  I am perplexed.  'Who' I ask in all innocence, 'who may go without me?'  Her response was immediate and short. 'THE PILOT' says she 'THE PILOT MAY GO WITHOUT YOU!'   Well, that really would be a disaster, I thought uncharitably, 'HE MIGHT GO WITHOUT ME'....

I was becoming, like the temperature outside, somewhat warmer.  I persisted - I wanted to know more about this erstwhile super-flyer who would apparently leave me behind (where I wanted to be) at the drop of a cold beer - which this lady was preventing me getting.  'Where is he now' I asked.  There were no aircraft on the apron.  'Where is he - right now?'  This lady looked directly into my eyes - somewhat square jaw starting to jut.  'Going to throw me off the flight I'm not on for not drinking' I thought.  All Judith's fault... Just then my just slightly aggressive, tank like rep was called away... Left without completing the implied threat...  This was no answer..

There, just a couple of yards away - female, same uniform...  'Leave it' my wife had seen my intention, but too late!  This young lady had a big smile... 'where is he I demanded - right now?'  She looked a little panic-stricken. 'Who?' she enquired.  'The pilot' I said 'where is he - right now?'  Not flustered, this young lady. 'Which flight?'..  'Manchester' I said, almost exasperated.  'There are three due for Manchester, do you know the number?' If you have that I can tell you where it probably is right now'.

At last! Someone with a bit of common sense! A bit of savvy! Manna from heaven! May the sun always shine on you!  'Judi'.... I stopped, Judith was missing, and she had the flight number - her flight; her ticket; her number.  And I didn't have it.  'where's Judith' I asked my wife..  'Coming back from the taverna' she replied - they just announced her flight!!

In the News...

Here's dust in your eyes! Again...
Our annual dose of the Sahara has arrived on Crete, maybe a little early.  But at least we shared it with the rest of Greece.  Story link.

But we can see what has gone missing...

A periptero or two might help...
There are now some large modern supermarket chains in Greece, but if you really want to make a living here forget houses, pubs and clubs - get yourself a periptero!

And get here faster - new Cretan airport ..
To be built at Kastelli - north eastern, east of Iraklion - not north western Crete. 5000 holiday-makers at a go, we may need a metro - its a 25minute drive...           Link to story.

But not everyone wants more tourists..

But finally, all emotions are clear...
Well, depending upon one's point of view that is - maybe that enigmatic Mona Lisa smile isn't really such a mystery - maybe she was just a little mixed up....           Link to Story.

Earthquakes are a common feature of life in Greece and rarely cause any damage. The problem is that the ones that do are unpredictable. Recent Greek research has indicated a strong earthquake in SW Bulgaria and the continued advance in methods of prediction.

A Little Extra News....

Starting with extra strength!  No, not mints - I mean another voluntary contributor.  Colin Turvey (see lead photo above) has 'joined' our list of voluntary contributors in order to share with us some of his talented bird photography.  I couldn't decide which would interest visitors most - a picture of Colin or one of his bird photographs.  Allowing that not everyone is interested in ornithology on Crete I that decided Colin won the day by a short head.  We look forward to his first gallery.

On a sad note, several international news agencies carried news of the death of George Psychoundakis who died here on Crete at Chania on January 29th, 2006. The British Daily Telegraph printed a superb obituary in detailing briefly his life and achievements.
                                London Daily Telegraph Story Link.

And maybe a little more bad news for expatriates living on Crete who think that leaving or giving their UK property or European property (or both) to family in the UK and then 'continuing to enjoy benefit from it'. If you are still 'domiciled' in the UK (not the same thing as 'resident') the Sheriff of Nottingham - oops, UK chancellor, will tax all your owned estate, anywhere in the world, as part of your total debt to him.  Pity a house won't fit under the floorboards.  Advice? Become domiciled in the country which gives you the best deal..

Perhaps the main item of news not mentioned elsewhere on this page  is about the now finished seamen's strike, which paralyzed shipping, including the life-blood ferries, throughout Greece for several days in February.  Fresh produce of Crete was stranded on docks in the ports of Iraklion and Souda Bay leading not only to strife between the seamen and the government, but between the seamen and local farmers, who were helpless as their produce started to decay on the docksides.

Personally, I suspect that  the government action of compulsory conscription of striking seamen into the armed forces with orders to sail has not helped matters. Trade union leaders point out that this law is still in force - a source of possible source of further trade union activity against it.  One thing which is apparent to anyone with experience of Greece is that tame ones are very few and far between....

But, on a better note perhaps for those seeking to buy property here on Crete is that the present Greek government, whilst planning to join the several small taxes on house sales into one, has decided not to implement any changes for at least two years.  Maybe 2009?  And then to apply the new tax to rebuilding costs and not market value... Sounds Ok...

But remember that governments make the rules and can therefore change them, and their content, at any time.  Another consideration is that although there seem to be no plans for a further hike in taxes on property here - (after the recent 19% Vat on buildings that are not already started) - that similar changes in the UK a few years ago led eventually to the present ever escalating Council Taxes in the UK....

There's no such thing as a free dinner! Or is that 'Lunch' - better ask a politician!!

The people behind the books:  Every book review has an introductory paragraph about the author/s. We have decided to go a little further and where possible, include profiles of not only these talented authors but also, where we can, of people behind them.

Good examples are  'Patouchas' - Ioannis Kondylakis  (Read the review) and 'Who Pays The Ferryman' - Michael J. Bird (Read the  review)  These profiles will be attached to relevant book reviews.  Watch this space...

Photo Galleries  NEW January 2006 addition..
Wild Flowers: Up from 144 to 168 different wild flowers.
99% have been taken right here at the base of the Rodopos peninsula. We are continually working on these galleries and will soon been adding further pages including detailed reference pages and more photos of each specimen. There are now more than 4,000+ flower photographs in our databases. The galleries will rise to 192 specimens shortly - an additional 24 already in the workshop! Detailed descriptions will follow soon.

Special Gallery.
A first! Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Kreta, a real photo albumn detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete. Klaus has supplied photographs for this gallery which is now on-line here at Cretanvista. There will also be, of course, a review the book...

Bird Galleries.  Building on...
Athanasios Sakoulis, who contributed the magnificent gallery from his book on Cretan wildlife to our site has now contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery. We will attach this to Paul Smith's bird-watching page in the near future.  Something worth waiting for... Just a little longer.

Insects..
We have built up an extensive collection of  photographs from which we are producing galleries for our wild life page.  The next of these will be insects - about which we have received few queries, but many of which are supremely photogenic.  We have some beautiful reptiles too...

GENERAL: There are now 13 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; and the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis, author of  "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" (Moments of Cretan Nature) - (Links below - bottom right column); our infant gallery about house renovation; and of course our annual calendar galleries containing 60 or so pictures of north western Crete about to increase by 12 - for 2005.

There are of course many other areas being developed all the time - including new ones in the pipeline....  Continued progress with additions to our weaving page for example, is being built upon to match the practice which has taken place since the page was first added.

E-Mail Requests..
I receive some brilliant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.
Our response time is usually within 48 hours.

We have been asked in the past to help locate people. We would love to be able to assist but regret that are unable to do this.  There is fuller comment in previous issues of CV News.

Questions and Answers..
Quite a lot of questions are received here at  Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

Guest Book.  E-mail links are accepted.  Website URL, Bulletin board and chat-room style links are not.  Website links are removed automatically to prevent inclusion of sites without agreement.

Book Reviews.
Because each book review is original - we steal nothing from the book covers or the reviews of others - it takes a little longer to deal with each.  No point our reviewing the reviews when what readers really want to know about is the content!

The Cretan Vista Calendar Photos - Birds.
We trying to build a specialist calendar of birds - whilst we are building our own library photographs - contributions are always welcome. They will always be acknowledged and copyright will remain your own.

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smith, our resident specialist on ornithology, last year underwent unexpected surgery for what was a fatal cancer.  We understand that his remarkable subsequent recovery is almost complete. New FEBRUARY Diary on line on March 16th on all Cretanvista URL's.

We remain deeply indebted to Han and Inger van der Lelie, 3815 PV Amersfoort, who enabled us to publish the June 2005 page of Paul's now unbroken series.

Can this be you.....or yours?
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be you?
