FEBRUARY WEATHER.....  Continued to be very cold, and very wet. There was the occasional good day, even a little sunshine, but anyone seeking 365/365 sunshine was to be sorely disappointed. Our logs were re-ordered and almost gone in no time at all.....

And, although on only one occasion, the snow came down, not even a pretty picture - very cold, very wet slush!

Astratigos Village Life.... Getting some.. XV

And keeping the cold out....
Last month I started by saying that 'there is nothing, just nothing like being in your own home, in front of a roaring log fire' - et al.....

But I didn't explain how to get one. Apologies. A very serious omission if you do not have central heating and a determined commitment to spend money on it. But then, not many villagers in this part of Crete have central heating of any sort, and probably no money to throw at it in any case. So how do you keep warm?

Well you can try jogging, running and jumping, but with the weather outside decidedly cold, and more often than not wet, your spouse and/or perhaps your children are going to look askance at amateur gymnastics, particularly the indoor kind. The outdoor kind might well involve a trip to hospital for repairs - best avoided. Cuddling together in a heap only works properly for mice or other hibernating creatures - and obvious breaks are needed for obvious reasons. Apart from that the neighbours may start talking... Shivering works, but not for long - and it makes you feel cold, not warm! No, to keep warm on a Cretan mountainside you need a plan of action ....

First, stop the draughts. Cold draughts (excepting Guinness) will lose what little warmth you may have left after burning the furniture.. Sorry, I shouldn't make light of a serious issue, but living in a direct line to the sea doesn't do much to stop the breeze - especially a force nine complete with sea water passing itself off as rain! Remembering the glorious views during the summer will only make the cold seem colder. No, first stop the draughts...

But make sure that your house can breathe! Yes, I know, apparently contradictory advice! But, if your house can't breathe it will stagnate, moulder, and get colder. And damper... To let it breathe - fit a fireplace. And fit a kitchen somba (stove) - a good one not a cast iron bolted together parts one - and fit a good chimney - preferably a stainless steel one. Saves trying to replace worn out metal type in gale force rains.... So, now you have two appliances, both of which are hot, which will suck in room air and warm it (and you) up. Ok, stop the draughts, fit a fireplace - or two! Unless you are very rich - use log burners. You can also use the ash to fertilize the garden next year when it's sunny!.....

Get yourself a good reliable supply of good logs, but make sure that they are cut to size. Hand-sawing is a no, no. The Texas chain-saw massacre is very simple to replicate accidentally. If you are not Cretan, or at least Greek, stay well away from chain-saws.

Compartmentalize. Being able to close interior doors is a real must. Just make sure that you can open them again!  And there you have it - keeping warm the Astratigos way - it should be on You-Tube....

But, like all simple advice, things get a bit more complicated at the implementation stage! First off, let me say unequivocally that it wasn't my idea to get cold in the first place! No, when I came to Crete I did so because I thought that it was warm.. The sun; the sea; the sand; the s... All of which had been said to create nice warm cozy glows. But there are problems....

Chopping firewood, or cutting logs in the superheated sunshine was definitely not one of my ambitions. Overheated wood-choppers probably clog  casualty departments on a good day.

Likewise with the sea - what am I supposed to do, don scuba gear and go looking for a sunken (wooden) shipwreck whilst waving a woodman's axe? Even if I found one the wood would more than likely be too wet to burn, especially under water.

Sand. In my experience just will not burn. Remember those red fire buckets full of the stuff just after the end of WWII? We never succeeded in getting one to burn - not even with petrol. And we certainly never found any trees growing in sand, so there would be none for cutting down on the beach.

Putting the whole thing in context, all the advice about keeping warm - carefully researched and presented with the very best of intent, just ends up leaving us freezing cold. After stopping the all the draughts and  fitting two fireplaces and a chimney or two, that doesn't seem to leave anyone in a very good position. At least not one that will, when things become bleak, see me sitting in front of a roaring log fire.... It all seems like a wasted exercise....

But wait! Yes! I see it now, I missed the final piece of advice - what a blindingly glaring omission! As if one could in all honesty forget that... The sun; the sea; the sand; the s.... Well yes, that is probably the real answer - 'The s....'

But I suppose that now I am going to have to face up to the fact that I may not be keeping warm at all in the coming year - after all my promises to explain how to keep everyone warm I can't remember what the final s.... means!  Now,  's'.... - in  five letters.......

A Little Extra (Current) News - 'Oklahoma!'....
According to Wikipedia(1) Oklahoma state located in the South Central region of the United States of America. The state's name is derived from the Choctaw words okla and humma, meaning "red people", and is known informally by its nickname, The Sooner State. Formed by the combination of Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory on November 16, 1907, Oklahoma was the 46th state to enter the union. Its residents are known as Oklahomans or, informally "Okies", and its capital and largest city is Oklahoma City.

And what, you may well ask, has that to do with Crete, or the UK for that matter? Perhaps not a lot, but let me try to explain - when your wife starts singing 'O what a beautiful morning' and finishes off with 'Everything's going my way' albeit definitely off-key - one should worry.... Definitely...

Only a minute later, whilst starting to trim my beard with seriously sharp scissors, I miss calculated badly and caught my upper lip. At first nothing seemed amiss, but then, like all cuts with seriously sharp sharps, a tiny spot of blood appeared, and then blossomed into a good steady flow! Everything had just stopped 'going my way'. Starting with the blood. It was going the wrong way. Everyone knows that it should stay in, but some of mine was now coming out... But there was a saving grace - it was a 'Doctor day' - appointment that is. A doctor should be able to save me? But I was in the bathroom, the doctor was about 12 Km away in her surgery. Not only that, I had already donned a superbly white shirt - well, I suppose I would be able to see the blood more clearly! I grabbed a tissue and shouted (more like garbled) for my wife... Try it. Hold a tissue over your mouth and shout for you wife....

The blood wasn't particularly spectacular, but It wouldn't stop leaking (nice clean cuts don't). I had to save the shirt! Holding the tissue on my upper lip with my right hand, I demanded help to save the shirt. But of course it had long sleeves - not at all helpful. Contortionist extraordinaire - we got the shirt off by a combination of hand swapping and leaking the occasional drip (I suspected that my wife thought that was me) into the sink. I demanded a burgundy replacement (in case of continued bleeding!) if I dripped it would hide better.... I managed to get it on....

But I would have to drive. Lets see you do that whilst holding a bloody tissue to your lips! Down the mountain.....

My wife had a better idea - put off the Dr whilst I stopped bleeding. She was right. I stopped bleeding and put back my whiter than white shirt. We kept the Dr appointment and got a prescription. Now I was really back in command! Next the Pharmacy. The shop was empty. Gone... Ok, there is another down the road no problem. The second was empty - also gone! We proceeded to a third - they were out of stock. I was getting the idea now.. The fourth (now 10km further on - going back the way we came) had one item but not everything. The fifth had everything - but we were now about 25Km and an hour later. Now well over 2.5 hours late, but then I was not bleeding. Just thirsty. We decided to do the shopping we needed and find a Cafe... The other way round might have been better...

The shopping was a further 15Km as we were starting - from where we had just finished - back at the start - and there would be another 25km to take us back home, plus the shopping time. Well, go on, keep the pecker up - get cracking. We did. We finally arrived back home only  6 hours and 70km or so after leaving on a two hour 30km round trip. And only grossly bedraggled!! And we hadn't found an open cafe en-route. Who could ask for more. Well, maybe the commander of an SAS training exercise (on steroids) might be one suggestion. But then, look of the bright side - take a tip from 'Oklahoma' - 'Climb every mountain" - (Climb every mountain, Search high and low, Follow every byway, Every path you know. Climb every mountain, Ford every stream, Follow every rainbow, 'Till you find your dream'). But wait - that isn't Oklahoma! That's from 'South Pacific'...

This is Oklahoma - Link  And personally I was a little worried about the third, fourth and fifth verses of "Climb Every Mountain' as they each end with 'For as long as you live'. Given my lack of luck in making 'everything go my way' I think living in the South Pacific may be very nice - but feel that trying to get there may well be testing fate rather too far.

In fact, having tested my day almost to it's limits, I had quite forgotten that my day had started with a little self inflicted facial surgery (the Dr didn't even mention it - insult to injury) and had gone on as it obviously meant to - all the way down hill - with the added insult of having to climb 900 feet or so back up to get home, I could not get away from another tune reciprocating around my the inside of cranium Elkie Brooke's - 'Pearl's A Singer'... Link

If anyone is wondering about my sad demise today - listen carefully to 'Perl's' lyrics - so very sad... But don't despair -  "Pearl's a singer, She stands up when she plays the piano, In a nightclub, Pearl's a singer, She sings songs for the lost and the lonely, Her job's entertaining folks, Singing songs and telling jokes, In a nightclub"....

My wife wouldn't let me anywhere near a night club lest I cut my beard shaving, but enjoy the two songs. If 'Oklahoma' isn't for you, get a quick short, put up your feet, and link to Elkie Brookes....

Photo Galleries...
Calendar Photo Galleries:
A new one every year for the past decade! The 2012 Calendar gallery is complete and online now.. The 2009 calendar topic was 'Wild Flowers of Crete' (after our wild flower galleries) and the result was superb!  Which is why we followed up the theme in 2010. And again in 2011! Because of our success we have already produced our 2012 wild flower calendar format - and our other themes continue. Cretanvista probably has the widest range of calendar galleries available in Crete. But we can reprint any issue with the any year's dates - whatever year that happens to be! Have a look at the 2012 wild flowers calendar Link.

Wild Flower Gallery - Now at 360 different wild flower photographs online - plus dozens in preparation - Galleries 13 - 15 are open. 360 flowers online. Gallery 16 is developing - which will mean 384 online..  Plus we are adding more reference information on redesigned pages - with more photos of each specimen to follow later. You may find an occasional duplicate, which we are keeping for the moment as the actual photographs will be different and will be used in a later planned re-organization of the galleries.

We are now well en-route to putting the first 50% of our target 1020 individual flowers on-line. But it all takes time. First find the flower (hopefully in full bloom); then get the photographs (sounds easy); put the photographs on-line (simply work); with basic information on each, making certain that it is accurate...

If you know the location of a rare flower please don't hesitate to help us photograph - we wont reveal your information to anyone else.

Please note also that All flower galleries have now been successfully re-coded to eliminate a bug which affected some Firefox browser versions. All the information will remain online at Cretanvista. With the advent of ipods, ipads, Blackberry's and other gizmos it will be much easier to take Cretanvista galleries on your field trips - and all the information that goes with them. **Your Amazon Kindle will display cretanvista perfectly - albeit in monochrome.

Wildlife Gallery - the first two pages - 48 unique photographs, including some rare specimens of the Cretan fauna. Some is quite beautiful, some a bit scary/creepy, but all now add to our wildlife page and the ornithology gallery pages.  Remember that it is always worth checking where you walk or sit before you do! Start here.

Chania Photo Gallery.
Our Chania photograph galleries commenced with a presentation from Klaus Dieter Thill, whose photographs of some old buildings in the area of the Venetian Harbour show a little of what we all sometimes miss. Have a look - it's worth it. Start here.

Miniature Chapels of Crete Gallery.
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a printed photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete, has now contributed the first page of his Chania on-line gallery.

Cretan Art and crafts - Weaving pages...
Weaving is in full swing and natural dyes are being made up and the photographs taken to add to this section. We will be adding our
pages on our new looms, equipment and new projects started as soon as we can. The weaving tends to take the time right now..

Our very first nature gallery...
Contributed by Anastasios Sakoulis, whose book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature is also on our site as a book review.  Anastasios contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery some time ago now. We will attach these to our bird-watching pages as soon as possible.

GENERAL: There are now 37 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis; our own wildlife gallery; the wild flowers; Chania; Mhlia (Milia) traditional village; etc.. etc...

Our improvements continue. We sincerely hope that you notice little - apart from increased enjoyment and ease of use. Keep visiting - your presence is what make all worthwhile.

Can this be you..... or yours... or mine?.. This Month - Wilf B.
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Is this yours?.....
