JUNE WEATHER ..... Hot and Windy. Very windy up here above the bay of Chania.  And the heat continued to increase (as usual at this time of the year) and was bordering on 30C at the end of the month.  August should be really good!

Next Month in Astratigos Village life...

 Ah well,
better get on with it.  Complaining about who changed which plan won't get the bricks laid.. But wait! Who are those strange men working with rubble and a wheel barrow?.....  Don't miss next month!

Astratigos Village Life.... Getting some..IV
(Continued from April - Previous click here).

At the end of last month...
"the Notary's assistant read the whole thing through in English, confirmed that we understood and agreed, and asked us to sign for the start of our dream proper.. On the morning of October 26th 1990, at Chania - we signed!..."

But just what had we signed for... Our dream in the sunshine, or the nightmare which could well result  from our attempts to renovate what in reality was an old ruined house in a remote Cretan village?  Even the surrounding roads were only tracks - mostly just wide enough for one vehicle and, as we were to discover at first hand, even tourists turned round at the nearby villages.

Where the tarmac ended!

Whatever, any anxieties about going backwards instead of forwards had been largely removed before we caught our flight home to the UK. Anything that happened now would have to be via telephone lines or mail.... But just for now we were on a high - we owned a bit of an island in the sun - our Crete...

We were blissfully unaware of the real costs, still clinging like a couple of bewitched children to our agent's 'guestimates' - about
£20,000 to buy about £20,000 to renovate - £40,000 all done at the worst.  At 1990 prices of course...

One other important thing that did happen before we left was that we managed to meet the architect who was to draw up the
renovation plans on site. Selected by our agent he seemed confident that we could realise our dream, and went off to draw up the plans and building materials list. The latter, the building materials list, was to become a rather elusive item - ala the Scarlet Pimpernel.

Even getting back to work at our local hospital didn't dampen our spirits. Many of our colleagues seemed to enjoy listening to the Cretan adventures of a couple of their more lunatic prone peers. Many must have wondered, like we ourselves did on many occasions in the early days, just what would happen before the trip was over....

The first indication of what would happen was not too long in raising its head. Our agent faxed us with the good news that all was proceeding well in the planning stage, and the bad news that the 'problem' that we had briefly discussed on our last visit - that of making a temporary repair to a corner of our 'barn' which appeared to be in danger of falling down was going to need around a thousand pounds... Coming so soon after paying over what was to us at that time a reasonable sum of money - about xx% of our agents total 'guesstimate' of around
£40.000, another grand for what was to be a temporary measure paying up was not without pain!

It was deemed essential. We were assured that the Cretan winters were severe, and lack of reinforcement could result in severe damage and possibly injury to people who might be passing when it fell down! A possible legal bill for injury or death would mean bankruptcy beyond a shadow of doubt. Could that 'shadow' of doubt be a ghost, waving his or her bill for the cost of passage to the land of Hades - the underworld of Greek mythology...

No, better to pay up and have the corner reinforced before the winter brought more falling down house, injury to persons, or even the grim reaper, Charon, himself. Any or all of which could, and probably would, turn our dream in the sunshine into some terrifying uncontrollable nightmare. A thousand? Done my lord. Well done!

But yet more was to come, or do I mean 'go'... We also 'owed' another
£300 because our original payment, covering, as we understood it, all aspects of the house purchase, including all legal fees and fees for the architect, had left our account that amount in the red. As our agent deftly pointed out...

Ok. We were in no position to argue with the man on the spot... With letters reputedly taking up to a fortnight; phone calls at around 35pence a minute and fax-less - no position at all...

Pay up! Smile! Grin! Bear it!  It's only money after all. What else would you do with it - feed and clothe the kids?! Pay up, but get the account sent on paper....

And, still on the subject of the British...
Cambridge University Classics Professor Mary Beard appeared to enjoy talking about what is becoming an increasingly intense debate about the return (or not) of the Parthenon (Acropolis) Marbles, but seemed unable to reach a solid conclusion - other than to say, in effect, that she couldn't reach one!

Sounds a bit eccentric (the argument not the professor), but the reality is plain enough - Britain has something which belongs to Greece and would gain tremendous international accolade by returning it...

A Little Extra News....
Not a lot of space left this month, so what to tell? There can only be one thing for anyone even remotely patriotic to Greece...

The Official Inauguration of the New Athens Acropolis Museum!

The '
Grand opening of New Acropolis Museum' - with just about everyone who was anyone on the date present and with full television coverage of the event all over Greece. Plus news snippets around the globe... Link

The inauguration took place on the 20th of June and I particularly wanted interested readers to note the content of the ANA-MPA link above - and that is only good to the end of this month.

Why? Well first enjoy the content of the link. Then note the eminent presences - and there really are more than a few - Presidents; Prime Ministers; Foreign Ministers; Ambassadors; Culture Ministers. From Europe and around the world. Then answer me this - who represented the UK? Why who but a deputy head of the board of trustees from the British Museum - home of the illicitly gained Parthenon/Elgin/Acropolis marbles - Bonnie Greer - (Link), who came away claiming to be more convinced than ever (she said) that the marbles should not be returned to Greece! Read para 4 of the ANA-MPA news link again:-

"Today, the whole world can see, all together, the most significant sculptures of the Parthenon. Some are missing. Now is the time to heal the monument's wounds with the return of the marbles to where they belong ... their natural setting," Greek President Karolos Papoulias said in addressing the international audience and television viewers across the country.

So whose opinion gets your vote? The President of Greece gets my vote. Hands down!!

Photo Galleries...
Calendar Photo Galleries:
A new one every year for the past decade! The 2009 Calendar gallery is complete and online now.. The 2008 calendar topic was 'Wild Flowers of Crete' and the result was superb!  Which is why we followed up the theme in 2009. Sorry, there are no calendars left..... Because of our success we have already produced our 2010 wild flower calendar (and our other themes continue). But we can reprint any issue with next year's dates - whatever year that happens to be! Link.

Wild Flower Gallery - Now at 288 different wild flower photographs - plus dozens in preparation... We have now added more reference information on redesigned pages - with more photos of each specimen to follow. All the information will remain online at Cretanvista. With the advent of ipods, Blackberry's and other gizmos it will be much easier to take Cretan vista on your field trips - and all the information that goes with it.

Wildlife Gallery -
the first two pages - the first 48 unique photographs, including some rare specimens of the Cretan fauna. Some of is quite beautiful, some a bit scary/creepy, but all now add to our wildlife page and the ornithology gallery pages.  Always worth checking where you walk or sit before you do! Start here.

Chania Photo Gallery.
Our Chania photograph galleries commenced with a presentation from Klaus Dieter Thill, whose photographs of some old buildings in the area of the Venetian Harbour show a little of what we all sometimes miss. Have a look - it's worth it. Start here.

Miniature Chapels of Crete Gallery.
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a printed photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete, has now contributed the first page of his Chania on-line gallery.

Cretan Art and crafts - Weaving pages...
Weaving is in full swing and natural dyes are being made up and the photographs taken to add to this section. We will be adding our
pages on our new looms, equipment and new projects started as soon as we can. The weaving tends to take the time right now..

Our very first nature gallery...
Contributed by Anastasios Sakoulis, whose book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature is also on our site as a book review.  Anastasios contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery some time ago now. We will attach these to our bird-watching pages as soon as possible.

GENERAL: There are now 19 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis; our own wildlife gallery; the wild flowers; Chania; Mhlia (Milia) traditional village; etc.. etc... etc....

Our improvements continue. We sincerely hope that you notice little - apart from increased enjoyment and ease of use. Keep visiting - your presence is what make all worthwhile.

Bird Watchers' Note

Bird watchers wanted!
We are still trying to fill the huge gap left on the site by Paul Smith's death. Paul was a highly competent diarist -  attempting to find another expert to fill his spot is a little daunting. We have yet to succeed....

Paul's diary will remain on-line - an incomparable record of bird watching in NW Crete - until we can find some way of filling the gap.

Can this be you..... or yours... or mine?.. This Month - Wilf B.
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be you?
