JUNE WEATHER..... Became an absolute scorcher on Crete with heat-waves which sometimes reached 40oC.  There were also days on which it was extremely windy, bringing with them the not uncommon risk of bush fires - some of which have affected the island....

A new one for us - but one that is more than well-worth a stay. Almost 'under new management' - but it seems absolutely perfect...

Astratigos Village Life.... Travelers Tales.. XVIV

....But overall it is for me a magic carpet ride. Sometimes easy; sometimes very demanding, both physically and mentally. But on the way, all those lovely people. They will help each other and you with almost anything, anytime...

'Lonely Planet II....
And so we left our home and family for our next stage of the magic carpet back to our home on Crete - 2500 miles and the next half of our gypsy-style holiday away, hoping that the preceding five weeks or so of rotten weather would at last ease and make our departure at least a bit drier....

But first, typical gypsies, we had to do an overnight in London, always magical, than off to the first ferry at Harwich to the Hook of Holland with Stena Line and then to our first stop at Maastricht.  A short hop but one with a special reason. The 'pied-piper of Maastricht'!  André Rieu! And of course his orchestra and chorus. If you are not familiar then please, do try this at home - find one of his televised concerts and be prepared to be hypnotized into total enjoyment. But be warned - one dose and you will be hooked, probably forever! We first watched a TV concert by accident.  We spent half the night watching, totally mesmerized, as the next three concerts followed in a row. We just could not stop watching - hence my tagging him the  'pied-piper of Maastricht'!  His concerts are a heady mix of total enjoyment and total enjoyment. Try a little....

And here we now were, in the square in Maastricht, his home town, surveying all like a couple of love-sick teenagers. Besotted. There wasn't even a concert on...!! But sitting in one of the small cafes which sit alongside the square with a drink and a sandwich will take you right back to a remembered concert.  Bewitched! Besotted! And now that we know the way we will be back - and next time it will be to a live concert - promise. Meanwhile try a little more - straight from Maastricht - utter magic!... More (60min) minutes of utter magic! (close video at any time to return here).

Maastricht alone was very well worth a visit. The hotel was good, the food (eating out) was excellent and everyone we met friendly - a very good stop.

And on to Colmar France, almost on the German border. Picturesque is an understatement - it is drop-dead gorgeous! A bit like a fairy story! The people again were superbly helpful and friendly and the food (eating out again) superb. We found the hotel rooms a little small, and managed on arrival to get trapped inside the automatic garage - which was happy enough to let us in, but like a real-life guard dog detained us until the maintenance crew got us out! And no, I am not revealing the location - you might likewise find it a new experience! A couple of days there (though not in the garage) and yes, we will be back...

Our next stop was quite a long drive away, the Hotel Noce at Brescia in Italy - not too far from Venice. For the first time in many years we did not stop at Lucerne, in fact, apart from a fuel stop we simply drove all the way through. That last meal at Buochs was unforgivable. Crossing the Swiss Alps changed the weather to sunny and hot. Very nice,...

Many hotels in Italy seem illusive - now you see them, now you don't. Many are close to industrial outskirts with a seemingly myriad of side roads on the way in - you need to be either psychic or possess a good sat-nav to prevent the occurrence of singularly recursive behaviour (going round is circles!) when driving. This one was no exception! And it was Sunday. On Sunday the extremely well reputed hotel restaurant was closed... But, immediately opposite was a very small hostelry which the hotel said was open.

It was. But when we went in and selected a table, we were gently and hospitably moved to what seemed to be a building block semi-outdoor area (where several other locals were eating).  No English was spoken but we managed to order steak, salad and chips.  Yes, steak and chips! But we both agreed without hesitation - it was the best steak we had ever tasted! At local prices. Utter magic. It made missing Buochs en-route back to Greece worthwhile, and at less than half the price of the latter, very much more so....

And on to Venice! Venetia! There were just two days left before the boat departed for Patras en-route to our home on Crete - but two whole days! Our very favorite, very lovable, very alive city.  The only drawback was that it was by now very hot, and very, very humid.  But the hotel was absolutely superb. Only a stones throw from the apartment that we usually occupy, which made us feel immediately at home.

The Hotel Locanda Herion. Cannaregio1697/A, 30121 Venetia. Italy! Managed by Maryana and Andreas (the latter wearing my hat!!) are superbly organised and enthusiastic about the hotel.  It is very central, and close to almost everything and everywhere. Nothing seems too much trouble. We arrived on a very hot and humid day on foot from the round and round 10th floor car park - which spirals upwards into the Venetian sunshine - very like pole-dancing! It feels like into the sky - but don't worry - you can check that description when you have to drive back down!

Back to the Locanda Herion.  It is not difficult to find, but has two front doors! Well not really, just two doors next to each other. Remember - the right-hand door is the right one. The left hand door, which I attempted to open first (!) is the wrong one... But once inside any problems you might have anticipated evaporated along with the steam from an over-heated me, in the gloriously cool air-conditioned foyer...

Maryana took our case without preamble (and despite our protests( about ladies carrying the bags of men....) to our very spacious second floor room. I collapsed onto the bed.  The air conditioning in the room refused to start! Andreas appeared as if by magic and Maryana moved us to the room next door immediately. No waiting around here. It was Magic...

The room was superb, all of it, with what looked like an antique wardrobe that I would die for - and a very large en-suite bathroom and shower. Everything was very clean (spotless) and cool in here. Plus this room had two - yes two - air conditioning units and both were working magnificently - ice cubes anyone?!

This is, I promise, one of the best and reasonably priced hotels we have ever stayed In... To find it in Venice is absolutely amazing. And no, Cretanvista does not pay anyone for our opinion. It is given freely with our heartfelt thanks...

Although earthquakes most certainly are a common feature of life in Greece. It is however, unusual for deaths, injuries and or damage to buildings to occur, which could lead to a false sense of security.
The author of a ten year study at the National Technical University of Athens says that Greece is sitting waiting for the next major earthquake without doing anything to mitigate it's effects. (Our italics).
There are certain existing buildings considered to be at risk from major earthquakes. These buildings, which include a number of schools, are being investigated with the objective of safety. Engineers have also called upon the government to institute checks on old bridges in Greece.

A Little Extra (Current) News - '...and here it is!!'....
The 17th June 2012 Greek general election result that is. Basically, without putting too fine a point on it, New Democracy won by a almost the proverbial hair - 30% of the votes (129 seats), the Syriza party of Alexis Tspiras came a close second taking 27% of the votes (71 seats) - 10% better than their May election result, breaking some election records in the process, and Pasok received a serious thrashing -12% of the votes (33 seats). Pre-election lessons had certainly seem to have been well learned by the voting population...

The overall results:-

New Democracy (ND) 129 - 29.66%  Gained 10.81%;  Syriza Unionist Social  Front (SYRIZA) 71 - 26.89% Gained 10.11%;  Panhellenic Socialist Movement (Pasok) 33 - Lost 0.9%;  Independent Greeks (ANEL) 20 - 7.5% Lost 3.09%;  Golden Dawn (XA) 18 - 6.9% Lost 0.03% ;  Democratic Left (DIMAR) 17 - 6.26% Gained 0.15%;  Communist Party of Greece (KKE) 12 - 4.5% Lost 4.05%.
Link - What They stand for.

But the man of the moment was Syriza Unionist Social  Front (SYRIZA) leader Alexis Tsipras. Love him or leave him, his party romped home to a close second finish just 2.77% behind the New Democracy leader Adonis Samaras. There is an almost irresistible speculation arising from the commencement of the financial troubles faced by Greece. Giorgos Papandreou led Greece into the first bailout (which ultimately led to his downfall) with Adonis Samaras, then leader of the main opposition (ND) vehemently opposing any and every deal that  Papandreou's PASOK was able to put together. Right down to refusing to add his signature to everything the international lenders were demanding. Adonis Samaras and his ND party was anti-bailout. It is not unreasonable to speculate that this was perhaps the main reason for Papandreou's resignation - and the loss of the later elections (which resumed at the end of the 'caretaker cabinet') to the National Democratic party of Adonis Samaras, pushing PASOK into second place.

The General election (June 17th) leaves one with a strong sense of Déjà Vu. With the roles of the current prime minister and ND and party in second place being reversed.  Adonis Samaras apparently now sees the financial salvation of Greece with the international lenders - almost vehemently so, whilst Alexis Tspiras taking his party into second place as the main opposition. SYRIZA and Alexis Tspiras are vehemently anti-bailout!

Could Tspiras possibly be the next prime minister of Greece?  He and his party certainly took Crete, a traditional Cretan PASOK stronghold and at least four other electoral, districts, by storm. Given his other recent performance -  including winning Achaia; Crete; Evia; second Athens; second Piraeus; Samos; Viotia; and all Ionian Islands excepting Lefkada, and the fact that Greece still teeters on the brink of financial failure, the ball would seem to be still in play. One cannot help but wonder....

Golden Dawn - having promised to expel all immigrants, and who had been offering practical assistance, food and clothing et al, to members of the Greek population to whom others didn't lost 3 parliamentary seats and came in at 6.82% of the vote, but were down by only 0.05% after large gains in the previous general election. The second lesson learned has not been widely forgotten.

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) led by long-time leader Aleka Papariga, lost 14 seats and came seventh and last in the league of parliamentary seats in Greece. Notably losing the island of Samos, a long-time stronghold of KKE to SYRIZA.

A second opinion  (pre-coalition) from Al Jazeera...

Moving on - when, once again, no party gained overall control the leading party - the National Democrats of Adonis Samaras, were faced with having to form a coalition - which they achieved at the first attempt. By joining third place PASOK (33 Seats) and sixth placed DIMAR (17 seats). 179 seats in a 300 seat parliament. A seemingly healthy majority. But it does have to be acknowledged that they did so without the help of Alexis Tsipras and Syriza, who declined to participate, remaining staunchly ant-bailout. SYRIZA is not, however, anti - EU and does wish to remain in the Euro zone.

ND leader Antonis Samaras (now Prime Minister) called for "a government of national salvation" - Lets hope so. Because whatever happens next, If Europe fails Greece, we may all be asking Alexis Tsipras for the way forward....

Photo Galleries...
Calendar Photo Galleries:
A new one every year for the past decade! The 2012 Calendar gallery is complete and online now.. The 2009 calendar topic was 'Wild Flowers of Crete' (after our wild flower galleries) and the result was superb! Which is why we followed up the theme in 2010. And again in 2011! Because of our success we have already produced our 2012 wild flower calendar format - and our other themes continue. Cretanvista probably has the widest range of calendar galleries available in Crete. But we can reprint any issue with the any year's dates - whatever year that happens to be! Have a look at the 2012 wild flowers calendar Link.

Wild Flower Gallery - Now at 360 different wild flower photographs online - plus dozens in preparation - Galleries 13 - 15 are open. 360 flowers online. Gallery 16 is developing - which will mean 384 online.. Plus we are adding more reference information on redesigned pages - with more photos of each specimen to follow later. You may find an occasional duplicate, which we are keeping for the moment as the actual photographs will be different and will be used in a later planned re-organization of the galleries.

We are now well en-route to putting the first 50% of our target 1020 individual flowers on-line. But it all takes time. First find the flower (hopefully in full bloom); then get the photographs (sounds easy); put the photographs on-line (simply work); with basic information on each, making certain that it is accurate...

If you know the location of a rare flower please don't hesitate to help us photograph - we wont reveal your information to anyone else.

Please note also that All flower galleries have now been successfully re-coded to eliminate a bug which affected some Firefox browser versions. All the information will remain online at Cretanvista. With the advent of ipods, ipads, Blackberry's and other gizmos it will be much easier to take Cretanvista galleries on your field trips - and all the information that goes with them. **Your Amazon Kindle will display cretanvista perfectly - albeit in monochrome.

Wildlife Gallery - the first two pages - 48 unique photographs, including some rare specimens of the Cretan fauna. Some is quite beautiful, some a bit scary/creepy, but all now add to our wildlife page and the ornithology gallery pages. Remember that it is always worth checking where you walk or sit before you do! Start here.

Chania Photo Gallery.
Our Chania photograph galleries commenced with a presentation from Klaus Dieter Thill, whose photographs of some old buildings in the area of the Venetian Harbour show a little of what we all sometimes miss. Have a look - it's worth it. Start here.

Miniature Chapels of Crete Gallery.
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a printed photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete, has now contributed the first page of his Chania on-line gallery.

Cretan Art and crafts - Weaving pages...
Weaving is in full swing and natural dyes are being made up and the photographs taken to add to this section. We will be adding our pages on our new looms, equipment and new projects started as soon as we can. The weaving tends to take the time right now..

Our very first nature gallery...
Contributed by Anastasios Sakoulis, whose book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature is also on our site as a book review. Anastasios contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery some time ago now. We will attach these to our bird-watching pages as soon as possible.

Can this be you..... or yours... or mine?.. This Month - Wilf B.
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing.........
