FEBRUARY WEATHER ...
Remained very changeable. Including a real snowstorm on the 13th which made driving difficult, but which made the landscape really beautiful.  Again there were some beautifully warm sunny days.  The nights were often very cold.  We had to buy an extra tonne of logs.....

                  APOLOGIES FROM ME!

Horizontal   Webmaster

Above: The February CVNews is so late that it has been a difficult to decide to include it at all.  Caused by my becoming ill for the first time in many years, certainly the first time in Greece, and hospitalized.   Being horizontal in the relatively young Chania General Hospital was certainly, as the friends who delivered me there had promised, "An experience"....

I have nothing but praise and grateful thanks to those responsible for my rapid, very competent and effective treatment. It is taking a little while to fully recover, but, my wife Pam being a retired nurse, I am doing nothing to rush the process!!

A NEW STORY....
Rather than risk boring everyone with my own episode of 'Emergency - Holby City', I intend to write-up my stay in Chania General as a short story. One of my "Yes, but what do you do in the day though?"....  efforts.  Possibly entitled "Sometimes we go to the Hospital"...

Retiring - or just moving here....
We receive regularly a number of enquiries regarding aspects of living on Crete.  Cars, caravans, dogs, cats, wives and children.  We have not yet been asked about mother-in laws! (Probably because they are, wise people,
already here)!

One recent visitor said that getting information about retiring here was difficult, but that he had found cretanvista helpful. We do try....

There are some simple rules.....
1. Get up-to-date information from official       sources.  The British Consulate in Crete has an excellent file of information for British passport holders - which you can get online from the e-mail address in the column on the left of this paragraph.

2. The Greek Embassy in Holland Park, London will also tell you of the various formalities applicable to YOUR circumstances.  Complete essential formalities before you leave the UK - it makes life much easier.

3. Talk to people who have already done it - but remember that circumstances are rarely identical.  Generalising may well lead you seriously astray.  People who have already "done it" are often convinced that what happened to them will happen to you if you follow their advice.  It might - or  it might not!

4. Remember - salespeople exist to sell something - holidays, houses, businesses, time-share, cars or whatever in order to make money.  From you.  Whilst they are sometimes a good source of information you should never treat any advice as being as good as official versions.  Regard the prime objective of any sales pitch as being to get you to buy.

5. Ascertain the true price of the property.  Don't be shy - you have a perfect right to know the cost of what something you are being offered really is. You will be paying the sales staff - ask them how much! Including VAT and any extras. If they won't tell you don't buy.. And don't accept vague answers.  10% is vague. 10% of what - where 'what' equals a stated (written - contractual) total price you would be asked to pay.

Include everything.

Have a look at: An Old House and think very carefully about what you really want.  Hire your own solicitors and accountants, not those working for he selling agent.  Remember that in the case of a dispute you can hardly ask the professionals acting for the agents to act for you also....

ASTRATIGOS VILLAGE LIFE...
One of the more pleasant aspects of living in a Cretan village is the lack of people! That is not to say that people are not welcome. Indeed, visitors are probably more welcome than they would otherwise be.  But the pace of life inflicted by such happenings as the the departure of the school bus at 7.30am and it's return at 1.30pm, marking, for example, the beginning and end of a morning's activity completely different to anything we know in England.

Right now there is considerable house renovation going on by local owners seeking to lure a holiday-making family or two here for their summer break.  Not a bad choice if you want to be off the beaten track.  Close enough to civilisation for a short drive to get you there, but far enough away from the maddening crowds to bring you privacy and peace.....

Though maybe not quiet!!  The traveling tradesmen - the baker; the greengrocer; the fishmonger; the sellers of live chickens and rabbits; of pigs; of clothes; of footwear; of glass and crockery; of beer and bottled water (and of course soft drinks), of chairs and tables; of carpets and curtains. All will appear, although maybe not on the same day, in an assortment of vehicles.  An assortment of vehicles having one thing in common.

MEGAPHONES! The original, long lasting, lifetime guaranteed (and guaranteed to get you attention), all-American bullhorn!! Often with an insidious twist - being connected to an amplified tape recorder....

You can't hear the sheep; goats; pigs and chickens for them!! But then nor can you hear the constant noise of traffic, of trucks, cars, trains and 'planes of massed people going about their daily business; of railway station and airport tannoys that you left at home.

What you might find a bit disconcerting here in Astratigos, (apart from the mobile tradesmen), is the birdsong; the calls of the hawks and eagles passing overhead; the outline of vultures sailing a blue sky against a blazing sun. Or the soft night-time hoot of scops owls; the sudden chilling screech of a nearby barn owl; or maybe a startled polecat.

The dogs bark. The cats meow.  The church bells ring the services.

But the bustling shops do not open. The tavernas stay closed and the bars don't have lager louts..... There are none of these things in Astratigos!!

Earthquakes.... Wobbles Return in February...
After a quiet start to the New Year February brought a slight increase in earthquake activity. There were three quakes of note reported:-

07 Feb: 5.5 Richter Scale 'Quake (undersea) between Rhodes and Karpathos.  Link to story.
09 Feb: 5.3 R (undersea) south of Kythira, off Crete.
Link to story.
17 Feb: 4.2 R (Undersea) Xylokastro fault, Gulf of Corinth.  Link to story.

None of these earthquakes caused damage or injuries and only the persistence of activity in the area of the Xylokastro is causing continuing scientific interest. Communities in the areas concerned are alarmed by these earthquakes, which are a common feature of life  in Greece and rarely cause any damage.  Although at least one professor believes that there will be at least 4 major quakes in the future.  Link.

In the News...

CHASTE...
Not a lot in February,  but certainly one of the more popular stories was that of the errant chastity belt which, a few days before  Christmas, set off the metal detector alarms at Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport (Athens International Airport).  It must have been something of a new experience for all concerned.

Being one of those who frequently (for completely different reasons I hope) attract the security staff at any airport (except Chania!) that I venture close to, particularly Athens and Amsterdam, I would not dare chance chastity belt!         Link to Story.

HARRY POTTER...
J.K.Rowling  teamed up with a British Classics teacher, Andrew Wilson to have 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' translated into ancient Greek.  The longest text to be so translated in the last 1500 years if the facts are right.

The theory is that the book can be used in schools to promote the learning of Greek.  Do any British schools still promote Greek language?

I can't help but wonder though, ancient Greek?  I have enough trouble with the modern version.  But then I am now sixty-ish, just young enough again to be able to lay claim to a second childhood and a copy of 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' for a good bedtime story!

A Irish Gaelic version is also being published - I think that, having Irish grandmother's in my blood (which will surprise few who know me well) that this is an  excellent move. Harry Potter is really an Irishman!!....             Link to Story.

Real Visitors...

Late February saw two real live visitors to Cretanvista/s - Englishman Eric Rowe, who helps ID our site flowers, and American Russ Collins, webmaster of website Provencebeyond.com.  Both now live in France so maybe you will see a news page from there.  More next time...

Well, that's about it for now.....
Very late this time...!  I am afraid that I really was taken acutely ill without any previous warning.  It was an unpleasant  experience made better only by the superb treatment made available to me at the (Public) Chania General Hospital.  Contrary to the promises of my friends, Adonis and his wife Christine (Vayonakis), the doctors "thought it better" that I should remain there.

Don't ever let anyone tell you that the hospitals here are anything better than first class.  I owe a serious debt...

Better late than never - though I note that at least one magazine I read is about to send their April edition!

E-Mail Requests..
I receive some brilliant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.
Our response time is usually within 48 hours.

Personal Information..
We have been asked in the past to help locate people. We would love to be able to assist but regret that are unable to do this.  There is fuller comment in previous issues of CV News.

Questions and Answers..
Quite a lot of questions are received here at Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

Guest Book.  E-mail links are accepted.  Bulletin board and chat-room style links are not.  Website links are removed automatically to prevent inclusion of sites without agreement.

Book Reviews.
Because each book review is original - we steal nothing from the book covers or the reviews of others - it takes a little longer to deal with each.  No point our reviewing the reviews when what readers really want to know about is the content! 'Books and good reading'.

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smiths' bird watching diary page remains very popular and hopefully Paul is well into his February 2004 diary.  We are sincerely indebted to visitors who have supplied photographs.  Currently we are displaying these in CVNews, (no room again this month). Hopefully we will receive enough to start a gallery of Cretan sightings.

Book Reviews - 2 current - *new book received...
The last recent review -  'Moments of Cretan Nature' by Anastasios Sakoulis, (ISBN: 960-91979-0-6) "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" in Greek -  is a super book with some magnificent photographs.  Our review is accompanied by a small photo gallery - our first review to do so.  Our site pictures (from the book) are, we think, nice!  The printed pictures in the book are in almost all cases very much bigger, nicer!

Books and Good Reading - Moments in Cretan Nature

Reviews in Preparation...
'
Eleni' by Nicolas Gage.  Published by Harvill - (ISBN 1 86046 346 0) first published 1983.  Reprinted.

This is his true story of a son seeking to avenge his mothers murder by ELAS Guerillas during the Greek civil war.  Real.  Compelling.  Harrowing in the extreme.  Revealing the Greek psych as nothing I have ever read.  But, unless you have no feelings, it could haunt you forever......  'Eleni' (in preparation).

Books Received..
A gift from American visitors.  'LAND OF CRETE'  360o
Panoramic Photographs. Meis Studio©  ISBN 960-86736-0-7.  Absolutely Beautiful.  Hope I can get permission to include a photograph.  Thank you Jim & Karen.

Can this be you.....or yours?
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be yours?
