JUNE WEATHER WAS...
We understand that June on Crete finished the way it started - very hot and sunny.  As it happens  we are in no position to give a view on the latter part of the month as we were on holiday in England where we gained excellent experience of a long forgotten summer happening - Heavy rain!!  But look what awaited our return.....

Thinking of Moving to Crete?...
Another thing that our recent trip to the UK enabled is a look at adverts relating to buying property in Crete from a UK perspective.

Before we left we had the impression that at least in North-Western Crete, house buying was achieving the status of the Great American Gold Rush!  Whilst we could not read every newspaper and magazine in the UK, and of course none from other European countries, we didn't have to look very far to see some names we already knew from Chania.

Hellenic  Homes www.hellenichomes.com
are well represented in UK publications, have several developments here in NW Crete and what looks like a very good package.  English reps who live here are a strong selling point.  And no, Hellenic Homes did not ask for a plug or buy this space.

Another advertiser in the UK press was Cretan Traditional homes - another specialist in homes in NW Crete and who also have resident English representation. www.cretantraditionalhomes.com  Again, this company did not ask for a plug.

There are several more local Real Estate Companies in Chania - they seem to have mushroomed in recent months.  Particularly those selling newly built property.  Remember though, unless perhaps you simply seek investment or holiday property, buying a home to live in is a very serious business.  Unless you understand the practicalities of living here you may find a few unpleasant surprises go with every dose of paradise!  Don't jump!!

Have a glance at our own advice right here on Cretanvista 'Buyhouse' page.  We don't sell anything and our advice is based on practical experience.

*One piece of practical advice we emphasize is that if you intend to move to Crete and claim tax exemption on your personal belongings, especially your car, start with the Greek Embassy in London and check with the British Consul in Iraklion.  The importation of cars especially can be seriously problematic.  It can be so even for people following the rules, and failure to do so may cost you your car, a large fine and maybe your sanity!!  Remember that it is the local customs officers who will make the final decisions....

Countryside Page & Gallery Open!
At last!  Although we have had the bird watching section of our countryside pages open for a long time now, it has certainly been a long wait for the rest.  Well, here it is, the first full page completed - which in itself is not too dramatic...  But!  But we have now started the flower galleries and in a while longer will have the first gallery showing something of the more mobile wildlife here on Crete.
FLOWER GALLERIES

Photo Galleries En-Route...

1. Gathering olives and makes oil with
    Kolimbari Co-op..
2. Barrel making with the Cooper of Kastelli!
3. Cheese making the traditional way - real
    milk!

Page Addition...
A recent addition to the page covering some of the possible day trips you can make whilst holidaying on Crete is a voyage to Santorini - the legendary volcanic island off the north coast of Crete - it is well advertised by travel agents and if you are staying in tour company accommodation their information boards and tour reps may well have the trip organised from your front door!

The picture strip: Some of the contributed bird photographs generously supplied by visiting birdwatchers who have taken them on visits here to Crete.  Grateful thanks for the generosity go to Gerald Rozemier and his wife from Holland and Chris Hobart from the UK.  We are hoping to produce a gallery soon but meanwhile pictures from visitors are most welcome.  Please contact us first.

Can you or anyone you know help make a new Channel 4 documentary?

NO GOING BACK

ARE YOU OR ANYONE YOU KNOW SELLING THEIR HOME IN THE UK TO MOVE ABROAD AND START A NEW SMALL BUSINESS THIS SUMMER?

Due to the success of Channel 4's compelling documentary series No Going Back, Brighton based television company Ricochet South are looking for exciting stories for a new series due to be broadcast early next year in 2004.

Each programme tells a different story of people leaving the rat race behind and risking everything to transform their lives and pursue their dreams of starting a business venture overseas. It is 1 hour of prime time TV on Channel 4 so amazing publicity for the participants business venture!

Some of the stories featured in previous programmes included farming olives and grapes in scenic rural Spain, carp fishing holidays in idyllic Brittany, safaris in Zambia, and art courses in Provence.

We are particularly interested in talking to people who are planning to relocate to any of the Greek islands.

So if you are selling up and moving abroad this summer to start the business of your dreams or you know anyone who is, contact Lisa Winter at Ricochet South on +44 (0) 1273 604 792 or e-mail lisa.winter@ricochetsouth.co.uk

NEW Accommodation in Astratigos...
OPEN.  The first house on the left as you enter Astratigos - a magnificent cream and green affair sporting two balconies and a small pool at the front contains two holiday apartments.

Maybe More shortly..  Another local owner has carried out some superb traditional renovation on a ruined house - and is currently renovating what what was his own accomodation - maybe for your holidays!

The New hotel  in Kolimbari is, we believe open... If you want information visit:-

The Grand Bay Beach Hotel

 at Interdynamic's website.

FERRY SERVICES

Both ANEK and Blue Star Ferries have car ferry services between Souda Bay and Piraeus.

Although an obvious competitor to the resident Anek Lines the Blue Star service times do not conflict from Souda.

Anek currently leaves at 8.30pm whilst Blue Star leave at 11.30pm.

SUMMER WEATHER
Crete is in summer mode.  If you have a holiday booked - the only brolleys you are likely to need is one to keep the sun off!

ROAD SAFETY REPEAT
Following a series of fatal accidents involving heavy goods vehicles and passenger coaches in Greece the Traffic Police are unlikely to overlook traffic violations of any kind.  In some areas they test erring drivers not only for alcohol but also drugs.

Although there have been recent reductions in Road accidents and deaths Greece is still bottom of the EU league table

*Motorcyclists - the alcohol limit here is almost Nil.. Don't drink.

MORE FUN & SERIOUS PLEASURE PLEASE!

I offer no apologies for keeping the next paragraph - which seems to have taken root on the news  page!.....

To our visitors who have taken the time to tell us that they have found our site enjoyable/ informative/ helpful/ or otherwise complimented the site - very many thanks.  We are trying very hard and it's really good to know that you like it".  Besides, my wife notes that many of you are ladies!  Please don't stop!!

Well, that's about it for now.....
I hope that this page and the information and news given is proving useful.  If there is anything that you would like to see - particularly if you would like a picture included - please let me know. But not without offering congratulations to Magazine Editor Michael Weckert and his colleagues at Frappé Magazine - Humourous, helpful and available free at many sites around Chania and district - ask at your hotel reception.

E-Mail Requests..
I receive some brilliant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.
Our response time is usually within 48 hours.

Personal Information..
We have been asked in the past to help locate people. We would love to be able to assist but regret that are unable to do this.  There is fuller comment in previous issues of CV News.

Questions and Answers..
Quite a lot of questions are received here at Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

Book Reviews.
Because each book review is original - we steal nothing from the book covers or the reviews of others - it takes a little longer to deal with each.  No point our reviewing the reviews when what readers really want to know about is the content! 'Books and good reading'.

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smiths bird watching diary page is very late this month - we do apologise.  The delay was caused by my own holidays in the UK - something Paul, fortunately for me, does not control.  The June diary will go online shortly after this page.

Book Reviews - No change this month.
The last recent review -  'Moments of Cretan Nature' by Anastasios Sakoulis, (ISBN: 960-91979-0-6) "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" in Greek -  is a super book with some magnificent photographs.  Our review is accompanied by a small photo gallery - our first review to do so.  Our site pictures (from the book) are, we think, nice!  The printed pictures in the book are in almost all cases very much bigger, nicer!

Books and Good Reading - Moments in Cretan Nature

Reviews in Preparation...
'
Eleni' by Nicolas Gage.  Published by Harvill - (ISBN 1 86046 346 0) first published 1983.  Reprinted.

This is his true story of a son seeking to avenge his mothers murder by Elas Guerillas during the Greek civil war.  It is real.  It is compelling.  It is harrowing in the extreme.  It reveals the Greek psych as nothing I have ever read.  But, unless you have no feelings, it could haunt you forever......  'Eleni' (in preparation).

Can this be you.....or yours?
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be yours?
