MY BIRDWATCHING HIGHLIGHTS FOR FEBRUARY 2005

bullet

1st Feb.  At Neo Chorio.  A female Italian sparrow fell down the chimney and was trapped in the stove. Luckily that was not alight at the time! Released uninjured.

bullet

4th Feb.  Along the coast.  We found 20 crag martins; a male whinchat; 30+ meadow pipits; and a grey heron.

bullet

7th Feb.  Again down on the coast.  Where a male sparrow hawk shot across low down in typical hunting mode, while 6 crag martins circled overhead.

bullet

11th Feb.  At Neo Chorio. At least 6 chiffchaffs were busy feeding in the garden, and a male blackcap gave us lovely views as it fed in a lemon tree just below the house.

bullet

12th Feb.  Along the coast. With our good friends John and Patty.  We started along the coast and saw a female kestrel; more than 70 greenfinches; 9 red throated pipits; a white wagtail; 5 chiffchaffs; a female whinchat; 21+ meadow pipits; 2 honey buzzards; a very early yellow wagtail; a snipe; and an early whitethroat.
Then we moved on to Agia reservoir where we counted 50+ crag martins; a white wagtail; 100+ teal; 80+ shoveler; 60+ pochard; 20+ mallard; 48 wigeon; 14 ferruginous duck; 150+ coot; 100+ moorhen; 30+ little grebes; 3 tufted duck; 5+ meadow pipits; 3+ chiffchaff, a marsh harrier; and 2 gadwall. On some mud banks 20+ terrapins were lazing in the warm sunshine.

bullet

18th Feb.  At Platanias.  A steppe buzzard was circling over the motorway.

bullet

19th Feb. Another trip out with John and Patty.

Along the motorway.  Yet another barn owl had, sadly, been squashed.

At Agia reservoir.  There were the usual numbers and variety of ducks; coot; moorhen; and little grebes; plus a grey heron; several chiffchaffs; and a flock of 15 starlings.
At  Omalos.  We found 10+ cirl bunting; 5 ortolan bunting; many chaffinches; goldfinches; sparrows; greenfinches; 8 chough; several stonechats and whinchats; a brambling; a tawny pipit; a redstart; and then, to our great surprise, we found 2 adult male and a first winter eye browed thrushes. On the journey back down we watched 2 immature imperial eagles; an adult golden eagle; a flock of 12 rock doves; a steppe buzzard; and 4 ravens.

bullet

21st Feb. At Tavronitis.  There were 4 swallows. Wintering or early migrants?

bullet

23rd Feb. Near Maleme. Another steppe buzzard.

bullet

27th Feb. Another joint trip with John and Patty. At Topolia were 10 griffon vultures and a raven.
At the nest site. where both adult bearded vultures were watched.  One of them went into the nest where the chick must be well grown by now.  On the way back we saw an immature bonellis eagle; and 3 redstarts.
Along the coast. There were lots of flocks of finches and pipits, including 30+ red throated pipits; a siskin; a marsh harrier; and then a strange chiffchaff that had us scratching our heads for a while.  We decided it was one of the eastern subspecies, probably abietinus.
Nearing Neo Chorio.  We found 19 crag martins and 4 swallows.

bullet

28th Feb. Near Neo Chorio. A single chiffchaff and 20+ meadow pipits.

And a few final words for February.....    An interesting month with migration getting underway.  Had there been any twitchers around (and thank goodness there weren't any!) they would have drooled over the eye browed thrushes and the eastern chiffchaff as they are extreme rarities.  We just enjoyed finding them for ourselves and appreciated them for what they were.  The eye browed thrushes were a first for Greece so the list is lengthening.

March will bring the waders; ibises; herons; and egrets, as well as masses of song birds.  We are looking forward to it!

Until next month, good watching.  Paul Smith.
