bullet

2nd Oct.   At Neo Chorio. A steppe buzzard and an adult light phase eagle.

bullet

4th Oct.   At Neo Chorio. Many thousands of Alpine swifts were passing south all day.

bullet

6th Oct.   At Maleme. A solitary dolphin was lazily swimming by as a single flock of over a thousand alpine swifts flew over very high up but could be clearly heard.

bullet

7th Oct.    At Neo Chorio. A juvenile lesser spotted eagle was circling with a pair of local resident buzzards and a female kestrel.   Pauls fifth grandchild was born today - mum and dad are both well - Paul and his wife very pleased and somewhat distracted from the bird-life. Ed.

bullet

8th Oct.   At Tavronitis. A flock of 8 corys shearwaters.

bullet

10th Oct.  At Tavronitis. A teal and a marsh harrier.

bullet

11th Oct.  At Astratigos. A Juvenile rough legged buzzard; a bonellis eagle; and two pairs of ravens.  As we were delivering an update for this website page we saw another bonellis eagle swoop down  and take a chicken from the next-door neighbours' garden!  We thought it best not to report this event as the cure might possibly be a shotgun!

At Rapaniana. A single honey buzzard.
On Rodopos peninsula. An adult bonellis eagle; 6 griffon vultures; a dark morph booted eagle, a dark phase eleonoras falcon; a pair of lanner falcons; several wood larks singing; a pair of Ravens; 2 cukoos; and the best of all good views of a juvenile bearded vulture - either a first or second year bird.

bullet

13th Oct.  At Neo Chorio. A juvenile hobby playfully chased the flock of tame pigeons a neigbour keeps.  The pigeons were not in the least amused!

bullet

15th Oct.  At Neo Chorio. A steppe buzzard circling with a pair of local buzzards.

bullet

18th Oct.  At Neo Chorio. A sub-adult bonellis eagle circling.  Heavily moulting it looked very tatty.

bullet

21st Oct.  At Neo Chorio. A flock of 3 - 4,000 alpine swifts took several hours to pass by very high up.  Also a light phase eleonoras falcon and a pair of honey buzzards which circled with a single local buzzard which was calling continously.

bullet

22nd Oct.  At Neo Chorio. The same bonellis eagle again.

bullet

23rd Oct.  At Neo Chorio. The bonellis eagle again.  It looks as if it is going to over-winter here like one did last year.

bullet

24nd Oct.  At Kaloudiana. 2 honey buzzards.

At Topolia. A colony of crag martins and 3 perigrine falcons which probably feed on the colony of rock doves living in the cave with the church of Agia Sophia inside it.
At Elos. 3 griffon vultures and a bonellis eagle.  At the nest site the juvenile bearded vulture is still about and both adults were displaying well.  Hopefully they will be breeding by Christmas.  Also a pair of golden eagles displaying; bee eaters; white wagtails; a pair of serins; a pair of stone curlews feeding on a beach; a pair of Kentish plovers; a female blue rock thrush; and a flock of 30+ starlings.  I had hoped I had left the latter behind in England where they are a serious pest on fruit trees.
At Kefali. A steppe buzzard and a beonellis eagle.
At Samadiriana. A single red rumped swallow.
At Norpigia. A pair of grey herons.

bullet

25th Oct.  At Neo Chorio. The bonellis eagle again.
At Rotunda. A single steppe buzzard.
At Astrikas. A pair of griffon vultures; a pair of ravens; lots of stonechats.
At Deliana. 10+ griffon vultures; several ravens; and many black redstarts.
At Neo Chorio. A single steppe buzzard.

bullet

26th Oct. At Tavronitis. A juvenile marsh harrier and 3 great white egrets.

bullet

28th Oct. At Neo Chorio. Several large flocks of swifts.
                  At Tavronitis. A marsh harrier.
On Rodopos peninsula. A lanner falcon; many black redstarts and wood larks; bee eaters; lots of robins; 2 griffon vultures; several winchats; a yellow wagtail and a single isabelline wheatear.
At Ravdoucha. An adult bonellis eagle flying with a juvenile and later a sub-adult; a pair of lanner falcons; a pair of Ravens.

bullet

30th Oct. At Chania airport. A single honey buzzard.
At Galatas. A wood pigeon.  Worth mentioning as they are very scarce here.

And a few final words for October......   A 'thinner' month this time, partly due to the weather, several depressions going through which disrupted migration and partly because I have not been out so much.  The coming of winter means that I have had to do some jobs around the house!  Hopefully I will be able to escape more next month.  In particular I  want to get to Agia reservoir to check up on the wintering waders and waterfowl.  Paul Smith.
