And after weeks and weeks of work...
It was now time to take off the finished product.  The ends were cut and knotted as my first completed work was freed from the loom.

Crete. Weaving. Loom. Removing finished article.

Removing your own finished piece after all the hard work can provide a real sense of achievement and satisfaction.  In this case not only had an old Cretan loom which had become disused after passing from generation to generation been rescued - it was back in a Cretan mountain village doing what it was originally made for - weaving...

Five months from the start!

Finished except for tidying up the loose ends. It was July 30th.

The finished article is 62inches long and 28inches wide.

It weighs 544 grams - better known as 1.lb 3.25 ounces! For all that work.. But it feels nice...

On the floor? Never!!
My first weaving (left) on a Cretan floor loom. Hanging in splendor with some later, more complicated, projects.

Crete. Weaving. Loom. Examples of woven articles.

Now there is no stopping me. I am hooked! My loom and weaving equipment is simple and very effective. If you would like further details or photographs of the tools used - some original and very old - some relatively new replicas - watch this space....

Weaving is of course one of only several Cretan arts and crafts.  This weaving section is currently being developed further to include natural dyes and equipment. These pages will be added as soon as photographs are available. Plus a fuller book list. We would be delighted to receive your comments.

Sections on the other arts and crafts will follow. If you there is anything that you would particularly like to see please let us know - we will do our best to add it to the site.
