NOVEMBER WEATHER ...
Wet quite regularly, with a taste of the real winter rains yet to come..  The first snow on the Omalos Mountain range arrived a few days before the end of the month - making the views to the east from our Cretan Vista base superb on the clear days.

Astratigos Village life... A letter..
Dear Brian,

Good morning from a rather damp and windy Crete. We have been having quite a lot of rain -which has caused the temperature to drop again. Omalos has been having lots of Snow so the mountains throughout Crete should be white for longer this year than last, so that's a bonus. Pam has also pointed out that I don't need to put the beer for your visit in the fridge now either, but my version is that it will get warmer before you get here............

The tilers are here right now - the large bedroom is finished. It looks superb. They are currently in the corridor/loo/bathroom and should be finished no later than Saturday, maybe even tomorrow. But I am a little unhappy with my gregarious Cretan team...

Taking the bull by the horns (or is that tilers by their cutters?), we had a staff meeting this morning. Commencing with my complaint about having to start the day in the middle of the night (8am) for four consecutive days in a row now. There was not a lot of progress, apart from half-smiles, knowing looks and a grunt or two, which didn't bode well for any progress I thought.

Pam contributed a bit about a pea she found on the floor - which she turned into an English lesson by asking Nektarios if he understood that it was an esca'pea '. He did and the resulting mirth made me feel that my complaints were being ignored.

I then proffered that there seemed to be some favoritism occurring to my detriment. Every day both Michaelis and Nektarios have Greek coffee, the accompanying glass of water and a prime selection of biscuits - delivered on a tray, whilst seated al our best table. All I have is a mug of tepid Nescafe whilst sat at the old plastic table, with a plastic table cloth.  The result of my complaint?  "Yes" said Nektarios - in a completely neutral voice, as if making an objective observation.

It was then agreed that Pam was correct in observing that they do the work!! Very helpful. The three cubic metres of sand I moved up our 3in1 lane to the house last Saturday are apparently not countable....

To be constructive I asked if we should pay them tomorrow. "Yes" said the neutral Nektarios.  I decided to provoke things and said that in that case (at their rates) when they came tomorrow they should bring a pistol and a carbine. I would then go to the bank and get the money!! Michaelis said to take a suitcase.. so I said maybe a big box - or even a cement sack would be better (for him). Nektarios said I would end up in handcuffs...

Not to be outdone I said that I would wear a balaclava...  It was agreed (by them) that I would probably put it on backwards and end up using the carabina (carbine) to make the cashier take money from me!!  Oafs. Serfs....  I need help here!

Retaliation.  I decided to pick on Michaelis' door numbering.  Having removed the bedroom, toilet and bathroom doors, he said that he had numbered them to facilitate replacement.  I saw my chance...  he had numbered the loo number 1 and the bathroom number 2...  "In England the loo is number 2 - my visitors will pee in the shower - or even down the floor drain" I said, feigning exasperation.  "Yes" said Nektarios....

I increased the provocation, mistakenly picking on Pam's frangipani, currently sitting outside on the porch looking half-dead.  "and the frangipani  thinks that it's winter" I said, as if that explained my feeling that things were not as I would have them.  (I had also forgotten that I had said that it was a good idea to place it where it stood).  What I got then was instant aggro from Pam... "What do you expect" she demanded - "it's freezing cold out there with all that gale force wind going across the corner - YOU'VE KNOCKED IT ON THE BLOOMING HEAD!!"  Nektarios remained silent....

Brian, all I need now is for the drains to back up! But I'm not finished yet, watch this space...

Site News.
German Language Version. Last month we said "Gudrun Harms, our German language translator has been making much progress of late and we are hopeful that the main site will soon be available".  Well, here is a surprise for even Gudrun - we have now been offered server space to host the German language version on - free of charge.  With luck and a little hard work by me - your hard work on this version will be on-line very soon. We are very much in your debt.

Getting Here.
For anyone interested in getting to Crete by car we have some interesting variations on our regular theme planned -including via some of the more esoteric Balkan countries and a couple of Italian cities - Venice and Rome for example.  If you are already here doing the trips in reverse is becoming popular..  Or how about coming (or going) by rail?

Food and Drink.
Our next addition is in the pipes and no, it is not a recipe for mince pies - and I really do miss steak and kidney pudding!! Keep watching.

Books & Good Reading.
Still growing rapidly and is now in need of it's own introductory page and index - which we are now addressing.  It may be New Year though the reviews will keep coming and are currently added below (Rt hand Column). Two new reviews last month and two in the pipes.

Photo Galleries. (See homepage links).
An addition to our flower galleries is in the offing - we currently have 3541 photographs of flowers that you can find here on the Rodopos peninsula.  Not all different varieties of course! But we will be expanding this section of the site soon, certainly well before the next season for visiting enthusiasts, and adding much more detail - including locations you can search personally.

There are of course many other developments going on all the time - including new ones which I have to bite my tongue rather than reveal until opening day.

Are we listening, do we hear?
We are and we do.  The continuously increasing numbers of visitors and complimentary e-mails seem to show that our visitors - 21,000 plus individual visits in our best month so far this year - appreciate our efforts.

Last month I confessed to being at a loss to understand the motives of those who bombard with rubbish spam and viruses the e-mail of a free site, which diverts any offered finance to sick and handicapped children, a bit difficult to understand... Much of this has now stopped - Thank-you. But..

I still find it difficult. We do not compete with commercial sites and we don't abuse the work of other people. Why then do the porn-pushers use our guest book to add links to their own sites?  Please, help us keep our site kidsafe.

WEBMASTERS PLEASE NOTE. If you have any of our work on your site without our consent - seek permission now.

Well, it really is good to know that someone other than me thinks well about the site and asks questions which are easy to answer.

What problems did we have? - All of them!
What was easy? - Nothing!
What was impossible? - Stopping laughing - is it hysteria?

(Sorry!- But I really enjoyed it...WB)

Earthquakes. Wobbling Still.....

Earthquake activity in Greece continues as usual. There were only four reports of note during November.

04 Nov:  5.6 Richter Scale  08.22am. The undersea epicenter was located off island of Antikithira, 250 Km southwest of Athens.  The shock was felt on Crete.
                                                         Link to story.

21 Nov: Two small earthquakes:-
3.6 Richter Scale 00.55am northwest of Attica.
3.9 Richter Scale 01.03am northwest of Attica.

The undersea epicenter of both 'quakes was located near Vari.                                                  Link to story.

23 Nov:  5.5 Richter Scale  Morning. Border area between Greece and Albania. Details unclear.

No damage or injuries were reported.

Earthquakes are a common feature of life  in Greece and rarely cause any damage. The problem is that the ones that do are unpredictable. However, at least one professor believes that there will be at least 4 major quakes in the future.  Story Link.

A extra weather  news...

Our 'November Weather' comments (above, middle column) mentions the taste of winter rains yet to come.  By the 8th November the taste was becoming a promised meal with gale-force storms moving across Greece causing serious mayhem which continued beyond the 22nd of the month.

On Crete major storms wrecked havoc along the northern coastline on the weekend of the 6th/7th causing flooding and major damage in areas of Iraklion, Agia Pelagia and Ligaria, and other nearby areas.  Cars in same areas were washed away and an elderly resident was electrocuted whilst trying to unblock a drain...

In the News...

Goodbye to Yasser Arafat..

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was buried on November 12th in the compound at Ramallah to which he had been confined by the Israelis.  He died on 11th November in the Paris hospital which had been attempting for some days to save his life.  Yasser Arafat had enjoyed a warm relationship with Greece.  Greek president Kostis Stephanopoulos and Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis led the Greek condolences.  After the funeral service in Cairo PASOK leader Yiorgos Papandreou described Arafat "a  great leader ...and a very great friend of Greece".  Yasser Arafat was also a winner of the Nobel peace prize. A very sad loss...  Until Jerusalem.      Link to story.
El Greco..
Crete is seeking to raise money to acquire the most famous Cretan artist's 'Baptism of Christ' due to be auctioned in London in November.  Estimated price - £400 - £600.000.  I wonder how much that would be in the El Greco's 16th Century day?               Link to Story.

Missing Immigrants.
45 illegal immigrants escaped from a hotel in Gouves, Crete by overpowering their guards.... But in a winter Crete it will be difficult to hide.                Link to story.

Illegal Antiquities..
Elderly Cretan detained for trading in antiquities, the possession of which is illegal without a licence in Greece. Link to story.

Cretan born composer to shoot down guns..
Miki Theodorakis has been appointed to head up the movement against firearm possession on Crete following the accidental shooting of a nine year old boy.  Guns are still a fact of life on Crete.      Link to story.

Cretan Rubbish not cheap...
The European court rules a rubbish dump at Pera Galinol  near Iraklion, a health hazard.  A previous ruling against another site - the Kouripitos dump near Chania, cost Greece 7 million Euros....     Link to story.

Try this for (large) size...
Scrap metal thieves dismantled a metal bridge near Kavala, northern Greece and made off with it...."probably in a truck".    Link to story.

Lost your phone?  Maybe the dog has it.!!
The ERT news station recently carried a story which all mobile 'phone owners should read and remember - especially if the dog rings and their mobile barks!
Link to story.

There were several other news stories this month of Interest to our visitors, including:-

The Roman Catholic Pope returning to the Greek Orthodox Church remains of two Byzantine saints, St Gregory the Theologian and St John of Chrysostom looted during the 4th Crusades from Istanbul (Constantinople).
                                                            Link to story.
Tony Blair please note..  The return of these relics had been sought since 1204 - a lot longer than the Parthenon (Elgin) marbles.  A bit of Christmas spirit might just secure valuable goodwill ...

Well, that's about it for now.....

This year's Christmas cards and calendars are now complete - in spite of hair-raising problems such as new printer cartridges which do not work; suppliers of special card who don't anymore (change of business); electricity supplies which revert to an earlier form (none) intermittently and without warning; unexpected visitors et al, et al...  When you live in a Cretan village civilization - or should that be sophistication - can seem a long way away sometimes!

The December edition of Cretan Vista News is still, even at this late stage (I can almost hear Santa's sleigh bells) still only roughed out.  Helping to increase my still rising panic is the fact that I am currently visiting, along with my wife Pam,  family and friends in the UK (and beginning to sound like British Telecom). Whilst this should be a reason for celebration, my laptop - fully prepped and ready to go, somehow remained behind in Crete.

I am having to beg, borrow and sometimes steal computer time to get this edition on line.  I hope that will not detract from your enjoyment of our site and if I don't make it back before Christmas - very best wishes to everone.

But please keep watching - the Cretan Vista website is always expanding and is regularly updated - and we have one of the best teams to tell you about Crete whose motivation is to do just that.

Kalos Ilthate apo tin Lincoln, UK!

E-Mail Requests..
I receive some brilliant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.
Our response time is usually within 48 hours.

Personal Information..
We have been asked in the past to help locate people. We would love to be able to assist but regret that are unable to do this.  There is fuller comment in previous issues of CV News.

Questions and Answers..
Quite a lot of questions are received here at  Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

Guest Book.  E-mail links are accepted.  Website URL, Bulletin board and chat-room style links are not.  Website links are removed automatically to prevent inclusion of sites without agreement.

Book Reviews.
Because each book review is original - we steal nothing from the book covers or the reviews of others - it takes a little longer to deal with each.  No point our reviewing the reviews when what readers really want to know about is the content! 'Books and good reading'.

We have still not yet decided this years format or theme.  Certainly we have enough photographs to choose from - and we are also, in addition, trying to build a specialist calendar of birds - photographs are always welcome.
(Please email us first).

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smiths' bird watching diary page remains very popular and hopefully Paul is well into his December 2004 diary.  We are sincerely indebted to visitors who have supplied photographs.  We will be displaying these in CVNews, please don't lose heart. Hopefully we will receive enough to start a gallery of Cretan sightings.

Here the author of Luberon Garden accepts a commission to search for the oldest olive tree - and where else can he search but Europe?  France; Spain; Italy; Greece - including Crete, all come under scrutiny.  Although Dingwall-Main may not know it he missed the goal - the oldest olive is right here on Crete. Everyone here knows that!  Read the Review.

This is his true story of a son seeking to avenge his mothers murder by ELAS Guerillas during the Greek civil war.  Real.  Compelling.  Harrowing in the extreme.  Revealing the Greek psych as nothing I have ever read.  But, unless you have no feelings, it could haunt you forever......  Read the review.

*'Patouchas' - Ioannis Kondylakis.  Kondylakis died in 1920 but his story of the rites of passage from uncouth shepherd youth to civilised villager has become a classic.  Cretan throughout.  Read the review

Making a Garden on a Greek Hillside - Jaqueline Tyrwhitt -
Isn't this just what we all want to do?! Superb plant detail.  The story of buying a plot; building a house: moving in; making a garden; Greek life - feastings, fastings, festivals and name days are a real bonus.  Read the review.

Land of Crete - George Meis.
Brilliant photography, superb artwork.  Beautiful photographic genius from George Meis.   Read the review.

Still the Best Nature -  'Moments of Cretan Nature' by Anastasios Sakoulis, (ISBN: 960-91979-0-6) "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" in Greek -  is a super book with some magnificent photographs.  Our review is accompanied by a small photo gallery - our first review to do so.  Our site pictures (from the book - with permission) are, we think, nice!  The printed pictures in the book are in almost all cases very much bigger, nicer!

Can this be you.....or yours?
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what, I have missed.   Is this you?
