NOVEMBER WEATHER ...
The beautiful sunny days (and nights) outnumbered the wet cold days by far.... But these are winter days. Part of the glossy sales brochures 300 plus days of sunshine maybe.. But the warmth lasts for only 3 or so hours - and the cold is just that - COLD.

       New Year Thoughts....

Think about it..          © Burgess@Cretanvista

A visit to Venice earlier this year resulted in this bit of Italian philosophy which seems remarkably good advice - from where cometh it I ask - EUREKA!?

Astratigos Village Life...
'It's August' said Dimitris resignedly, 'in August there is no-one in Athens. Everyone is on holiday - can you get one from England'?

August in Greece is a no, no, no if you have a problem which means spare parts - for anything - if they come from Athens. Usually overnight on the ferry. August is a month-long 'Ochi' day.... The 'one' in question was an automatic gear box for my beloved Nissan Bluebird. After 20 years it had finally decided to stay firmly in neutral! No gear, no go! And one definitely was not coming from Athens on the overnight ferry.....

Being quite mad I rang my local Nissan dealer in the UK. 'Certainly have sir, when can you come in'?  Well, there was the small question of around 2500 miles (in neutral) and 1500 GB Pounds (in money) not including ferry fares and VAT to be considered. Nothing was going to solve this one. Nothing that is, apart from a bit of help.

Nissan UK would come out they assured me! I assured them that they would not, not on my slate anyway. In the absence of 1500 GB Pounds (and carriage), they relented and gave me the name of a dealer in 'almost new' spares.  I 'phoned him and ended up with a 'less than 3,000 miles 'guaranteed' auto box for 450 quid! When I asked if the guarantee applied in Crete there was a hasty conference - and the 'box' was mine for 250!!

A friend who owns a house in Rodopos just happened to be shipping a container from the UK -  and kindly had my 'new' gearbox added for free. Well, we did agree to meet the container contents in Rodopos as he wouldn't be there. The Greek delivery driver duly arrived and emptied his truck - all except a large crate which had a different address on it...

'OK' I supplied, 'it's for me'. He delivered it free of charge (coffee) to the bottom of our lane - too large to get his truck into, too heavy to manhandle.. Stuck again...

Enter Michaelis, my next door neighbour. Without provocation he hitched a small trailer to his Mechanichi - one of those tricycle like lawnmowers with a tiny engine - and he and his daughter-in-law delivered from bottom of lane to my courtyard!  Next day he reversed the procedure and his son and daughter-in-law drove the blessed gearbox to Nissan in Chania. No wonder it had done less than 3,000 miles, it hadn't turned a cog in the last 2500 miles plus en route from the UK. Clever! Automatic!

I hadn't really done much myself.....

Nissan telephoned a couple of days later asking for my illustrious presence. It was the sort of invitation one could not refuse - I had to look into the 'box'....  As it turned out they meant the crate containing the gearbox.

I duly attended and peered into the now open crate.  Gearbox - present. Torque converter - present. Dirt - absent! Totally.  What I had was what appeared to be a brand new automatic gearbox. Even the bolt heads were shiny and unmarked, although it must have been used (maybe during it's 3'000 miles on the back of a lorry) as there was  a bit of transmission fluid about.....

We agreed that this was the real McCoy and 24 hours later Dimitris rang to say that the car was ready!

When I arrived 'Fred' - my trusty friend - was ready and waiting. Dimitris was all smiles and declared the job and the car 'Good'. From past experience I knew that if he said it was good then it very definitely was. He tests every car himself, on the road, before they are handed back to their owners.

Well, I thought, not bad! 2500 miles 250 quid and I have a new auto box and the Nissan service boss declaring it 'Good'. Not bad, not bad at all..... All I did was get stuck!

Enter my wife. Always far more practical than myself (although look what I had achieved without even getting my hands dirty!) who wanted to know the fitting costs.

'Now' said Dimitris, 'it will be a little extra because we had to call in an auto-electrician. The new box is slightly different electrically and we needed a specialist... Sixty five pounds total with 'FPA' (vat).  Its a good job the holidays are over or we couldn't have got the electrician'!! (Or a new gearbox I wondered)?!

A Little Extra News
"Bringing the sunshine, Keeping the rain off"! The motto I try to live up to. Unfortunately, after much absolutely spring-like weather which brought out the late autumn flowering wild flowers, I must once again 'bite the bullet' so to speak... Unlike the outpouring of people from the UK, I, in my own inimitable way, am about to return there!

But, before everyone becomes too emotional, (cheering/clapping - anyone weeping? Anyone?) let me make you aware that come the New Year I will be back...

(cheering/clapping - anyone weeping? Anyone?)

Meanwhile - 'BOTH' - that is the interchangeably equal Ann & Richard (ladies first!) are here to hold it all together and bring the latest news from Crete to our visitors.

All this years Cretan Vista calendars and cards are ready and moving and a 'photo gallery is on display in Chania. Paul Smith has donated a premium bond to Gt Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London - and Colin Turvey and his wife Sue are following Ann & Richard's example and jetting off to India for a couple of weeks!

Me, well, I am NOT looking forward to the UK. Crete really is something very, very special. But then so is our family, especially our grand-children - and I suppose a pint of Guinness at the local won't be more than a fiver!!

Photo Galleries
Calendar Photo Galleries:
No Change this month...
A new one every year! The 2006gallery is, of course, on-line (LINK). Now the 2007 Calendar is as good as complete. Having already printed the first proof we can safely say that it is developing well and will be on-schedule. Links are on the home page.

Bird Galleries.
  Gallery Page 4 pending...
The first pages of our bird photograph gallery went on line in March 2006. Colin Turvey's Cretan Bird-Life photograph gallery (see February News) has now added a third page. We are now working hard on adding page 4 - another 12 of Colin's bird photographs - which will bring the number up to 48 so far. A big plus for Cretanvista.

Wild Flowers
: Over 200 different wild flowers will be on-line with our next upload.
99% of photos have been taken right here at the base of the Rodopos peninsula. We are continually working on these galleries and we will be including detailed reference information plus more photos of each specimen. We will be publishing our own book next year - but all the information will remain on line.

Cretan Countryside:
The basic page is already on-line - has been so for some time.  In the background we have been busy collecting more photographs and will very soon be publishing the first gallery. There really is some superb wild-life on Crete, and we have some outstanding photographs of the majority of wildlife - including even the 'ugliest' - which often turn into something quite beautiful. But not always ....

And More -

Anastasios Sakoulis, who contributed the magnificent gallery from his book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature to our site,  has also contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery. We will attach this to Paul Smith's bird-watching page in the near future.

But that isn't all...
Anastasios Sakoulis has also given us permission (and supplied the photographs) to produce a gallery of his latest book. A book of 20 superb postcards of Cretan wildlife called Naturally... Crete

Miniature Chapels of Crete.
A first!
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a real photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete. Klaus has supplied photographs for this gallery which is now on-line here at Cretanvista. There will also be, of course, a review the book - which we have already. Klaus is not keen on that as the book is not publicly available, but we hope to persuade him!

He is working on some photographs of Chania and if all goes well we will be publishing these in the not too distant future.

GENERAL: There are now 13 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; and the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis, author of  "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" (Moments of Cretan Nature); our infant gallery about house renovation; and of course our annual calendar galleries containing 60 or so pictures of north western Crete about to increase by 12 - for 2007.

E-Mail Requests..
We receive some brilliant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.
Our response time is usually within 48 hours.

Personal Information..
We have been asked in the past to help locate people. We would love to be able to assist but regret that are unable to do this.

Questions and Answers..
Quite a lot of questions are received here at  Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

Guest Book.  E-mail links are accepted.  Website URL, Bulletin board and chat-room style links are not.  Website links are removed automatically to prevent inclusion of sites without agreement.

The Cretan Vista Calendar Photos - Birds.
We trying to build a specialist calendar of birds - whilst we are building our own library photographs - contributions are always welcome. They will always be acknowledged and copyright will remain your own.

(Please email us before sending pictures).

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smith's  NOVEMBER DIARY is now on line at all Cretanvista URL's.

We remain deeply indebted to Han and Inger van der Lelie, 3815 PV Amersfoort, who enabled us to publish the June 2005 page of Paul's now unbroken series.

BUT, we are now working on a solution to this particular indebtedness, not just hoping that one will pop out of the Cretan countryside!  We had hoped that perhaps Han and Inger would return to Crete - we know that Paul would just love to meet the couple who took over his page - and then skipped the country whilst he was still hospitalised!

We would love to know how the bird watching has progressed since this starlit beginning......

Can this be you.....or yours?.. This Month - wilf B.
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be yours?
