Astratigos Village Life - 'Traveller's tales III'...
Some of the funniest things happen when traveling. Some are laughable. Some are hysterical. Some are unexplainable. And some are just plain 'happenings'.... This one starts at the highest level - 'hysterical'....! The real beginning of our journey to Crete - getting married!

At the time of our wedding my wife Pam and I were employed at the then Ashton-U-Lyne General Hospital, just outside Manchester. Our planning was impeccable.....

To avoid looking anything but my best I had ordered a made to measure suit from no less an organisation than Willoughby Tailoring - right next door to Piccadilly. Our best man, an accomplished chef, was making the wedding cake - no problems there. To avoid denominational issues we married in a Congregational church. To avoid misunderstandings the minister was an ex-consultant psychiatrist (Really). To avoid unnecessary expense Harold, the Chief Usher, had booked only one car! To avoid arriving at the wrong honeymoon destination Pam herself had sorted out our escape route.. As far as I could see, the only things left were Pam's hairdo and a pair of new shoes and a tie for me. I could acquire my bits on the day while Pam was having her hair done. It was all systems go.....

It started with the suit.
Willoughby Tailoring, that bastion of pure new wool and hand-made hire purchase had "ahem, mislaid it in transit - but not to worry, it was not lost."  I asked the difference. I was assured that they knew that it was on a train - but didn't quite know which one - but not to worry, it should arrive in time. Why should I worry? I was only getting married in four days time and had, having paid the deposit, only 23 more monthly payments to make before this hand-made mantle would be truly mine. Besides, they knew it was on a train, no need to panic.  I rang the Daily Express.

Within two hours I was able to select any suit in Willoughby's store; have it altered to my measurements and collect it 24 hours later... Standing in for me, Jenny, (Theatre Sister) failed completely to make the collection, having also failed completely to see the very new plate glass door standing in front of her as she tried to enter.... Willoughby's apologized profusely.... We promised not to tell the Daily Express - if we got the suit.

Saturday morning - 9am, promised.

The NORWEB (electricity) engineers decided to take industrial action at the same moment my best man decided to finish the cake, delaying it's completion. Knowing me well, my best man decided not to tell me that until after it's completion. The day before the wedding! However there remained a small problem. He adamantly refused to refused to move the cake to the reception address until the icing was truly hard - Saturday morning. I would drive, he decided, while he ensured the security of the cake. No problem. Ashton to Macclesfield (25 miles) - Macclesfield to Ashton (25 miles); set up the cake; off to Manchester (10 miles); collect suit; get shoes and tie; back to Ashton (10 miles); get changed.... We would be ready for church by, say, 11am with an early start.

Saturday morning was getting just a little crowded...

The day dawned early for me. 6am saw the ignition key of my hired, very natty (for the 60's) sky blue Ford Corsair turned to "Start". By 7am I was helping my Best Man load the cake and accoutrements into the car, followed closely by his suit and himself. "Take it easy and avoid the bumps" says he "I don't want cracked icing." After 25 miles of nursing the cake at 30 miles an hour (or less, depending upon my navigators interpretation of "bumps" I began to wonder if our personal icing wasn't already cracked.

At the reception venue, the reception we got was a little cool. Pam was having her hair done. Jenny (Maid of Honour) was nowhere to be seen. The people in charge (Guests) I had not met before... They seemed to think that my Best Man and I were delivery men!! "Bring it in and put it on this table - CAREFULLY PLEASE." He was clearly an officer and a gentleman. We were, equally clearly, two rather scruffy, unshaven, unreliable and possibly hung-over delivery men in need of serious supervision. After a successful "drop" my Best man's gentle cough and our "Thank-you sir" were met with "Well done, thank-you" and not a penny more.
However we were to get our own (sweet) revenge later in the day when the gentleman in question surveyed the Groom and Best Man with the puzzled expression of one clearly attempting to recollect where he had seen us before...

The clock marched on. Head for Manchester - collect Harold, (Chief Usher), en-route to collect suit. We made excellent time. My Best Man and I knew that because Harold was talking to God again. As we reached the traffic lights on Piccadilly we could see Willoughbys, the parked police car and the nice new double yellow lines! We made an instant decision. I would stop only long enough for Harold to jump out. He would collect the suit and wait by the kerb. I would race round the block and stop just long enough for him to jump back in. It isn't really possible to convey the excitement - a "hit" and "run" under the noses of the law. In the event the traffic was so thick by the time I had driven round the block that I was "parked" outside Willoughbys for several minutes. No time now for shoes and tie, I would have to get them in Ashton...    (Part 2 next month...)

In the News and News Reviews..
Archbishop Ieronymos ...
The new Archbishop of Athens - Ieronymos, was elected by the Holy Synod in the final vote at noon on Thursday 7th February.

Link to Story.

The newly elected Archbishop was enthroned at the Athens Mitropolis Cathedral on Sunday 16th February. The entire service was carried live by Greek television channels. There are high expectations that Ieronymos will place the Greek people and the Orthodox Church back on a strongly religious path.             Link to Story.

But in spite of radical changes in direction, including the avoidance of politics and the aiding creation of a new Muslim cemetery in Athens, the decision of Archbishop Ieronymos to accept the government's decision to create new laws favouring co-habitation have met strong opposition from the Holy Synod.

And then the snow came...

There are several ways of looking at snow. For skiers it is a blessing - for travelers and the elderly it can be a serious problem...

But it didn't stop the Greek navy....
Or the coast guard as a Russian ship hit by the weather also suffered engine failure...
                                                 Link to Story.

Or the police on Crete...
As they now sought an Albanian man - the 18th suspect in the ongoing saga of crime enveloping the Cretan village of Zoniana.
                                                 Link to story.

Who also made arrests in Hania...
After three men were found in possession of weapons, including knives, rifle and hand-guns...                         (Item 7) Link to story.

But policing Crete is a risky business....
As a police chiefs car, dynamited outside his Hania home, is testimony. The blast also destroyed two other vehicles and a motorcycle..

And Robbers give them little rest...
Two suspects, a third sought - for more than thirty robberies!

Plus street fighting doesn't help...
Doesn't help anyone as Albanians fight - some using weapons, in Friday night brawl which leaves four in hospital under police guard.

And youths attack ambulance centre...
After they claimed there had been a delay in the arrival of an ambulance called to a friend who had been drinking. Police arrested the three youths...

Even off-duty officers are not safe...

On a lighter note - another Greek first!
Not for the first time (no pun intended) since I started editing this news page, it has been a genuine and heartfelt pleasure to note another Greek 'First'...

This time it is congratulations to George Stamatopoulos, who sculpts for the Bank of Greece, winning an EEC eurozone competition for the design to grace a 2 euro coin issue to mark the 10th Anniversary of the Euro.

Some mark - January 2009 will see the issue of 90 million of the coins in the 15 eurozone countries. George has just become famous - at least 90 million copies!!             Link to story.

And Finally....
Yvette Varvaressou of the popular English language Daily 'Ekathimerini' newspaper in Greece - has interesting proposals re the Cretan mountain village of Zoniana,  which recently achieved notoriety for it's dedication to producing 'pot'.  She suggests that the populace should look to producing medicinal herbs to replace income lost to police intervention regarding 'Pot'.

Whilst not denigrating Yvette's very positive viewpoint one cannot help but link the reputedly healing herb Dittany (Dictamo) - often sold here on Crete as a tea - with 'Pot'..... 'Tea Pot' perhaps?!

Hippocrates would turn in his grave! But well done Yvette. Very well done!       Link to story.

A Little Extra News....
Last month I said "Here we are, back in our most beautiful place in the world - in Crete. The land where a smile is worth a thousand words and where people talk incessantly!"

What I failed to say was that, at least in spring and early summer, the beautiful place/people/gatherings were supplemented by something else - a real, true-life bonus! As winter grey skies became pastel pale blue - setting off the white snow capped peaks of the Omalos peaks, standing majestically sunlit about 15Km away, the spring flowers started to show. Slowly (maybe cautiously) at first, but gradually increasing speed and multiplying in number until, at the end of the month, the whole of north western Crete seemed ablaze with colour.

Swarms of roadside white daisies gave way to the almost ever present yellows of the beautiful Oxalis pes - fields full. Whilst down on the beach the pastel purple/pink/white flowers of the Mathiola tricuspidata (a Cress) mingled with the egg yolk yellows and light green foliage of Anthemis rigida.  Away from the coast Anemone coronaria - predominantly pastel blues and purples broken by the occasional red and yellow of Turban Buttercups - Ranunculus asiaticus, although we saw no white specimens.

Climbing to the Garrigue (Phrygana) and olive groves at the base of Rodopos peninsula proper revealed superb examples of the Orchid family - the Giant Orchid - Barlia robertiana, the beautiful Pink Butterfly Orchid - Orchis papilionacea and a sheer multitude of the sometimes elusive creamy white and pink of Orchis lactea. And on...and... on... Pure magic! Now, only a few short days later the entire north west appears to be alive.  Birds, bees, flowers , insects, lizards - the whole gamut of our flora and fauna is appearing rapidly - competing at full boost to win and fill as much space as possible. In short, north western Crete is alive...

I suppose that one could say alive about London, Paris, Berlin or Rome - But you won't see anything to rival Cretan countryside in any European city.

A Little Site News.
New! Commencing this month - A wildlife diary from Andrew Bell - "Countryman in Crete".

We are now into our second month of a major upgrading of the entire site. Our gallery pages are being updated, in some cases are already updated, and new galleries added. Two new galleries went on-line last month - our 2007 Calendar (Wild flowers - our best yet) - is about to follow
.

Photo Galleries...
New Last month...

CretanVista Wildlife Gallery -
the first two pages - the first 48 unique photographs, including some rare specimens of the Cretan fauna. Some of is quite beautiful, some a bit scary/creepy, but all now add to our wildlife page and the ornithology gallery pages. Not all sun, sea and sand maybe, but everything depicted really is here. Always worth checking where you walk or sit! Start here.

Plus...
Chania Gallery.
Our long planned Chania photograph galleries commence with a presentation from Klaus Dieter Thill, whose photographs of some old buildings in the area of the Venetian harbour show a little of what we all sometimes miss. Have a look. Start here.

Klaus will be adding a little text shortly to this new gallery in the near future, but the gallery itself has been uploaded for appraisal. Do have a look, especially if you are familiar with Chania - you might just see that which you so far have not! His other gallery is still on-line:-

Still on-line - Miniature Chapels of Crete.
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a printed photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete, has now contributed the first page of his Chania on-line gallery.  Klaus has supplied photographs for this gallery which is about to go on-line here at Cretanvista. Our review of the printed book - which we have already - is still planned. Klaus is still not keen on that, as the book is not publicly available, but we hope still to persuade him!

Cretan Art and crafts - Weaving...
Our updated hand-weaving page is now on-line. This revision includes the first full project - start to finish!  A beautiful traditional craft producing beautiful products. And much more to follow. *Weaving is in full swing and dyes are being made up and the photographs taken to add to this section - and we will be adding our
new looms acquired and new projects started.

Wild Flower Gallery - Still at 216 different wild flowers - but heading rapidly for 240 - and... We are now adding much reference information on redesigned pages!
99% of the photographs have been taken right here at the base of the Rodopos peninsula. We are now adding the promised revisions - including more detailed references on each page and more photos of each specimen to follow. We will be publishing our book - but all the information will remain on line.

Bird Galleries
:  Gallery Page 5 developing...
The first pages of our bird photograph gallery went on line in March 2006. We are now working hard on adding page 5 - another 12 of Colin Turvey's bird photographs - which will bring the number up to 60 so far. Colin has been a big plus for Cretanvista.

We still, of course, have our very first nature gallery...
Contributed by Anastasios Sakoulis, whose book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature is also on our site as a book review.  Anastasios contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery some time ago now. We will attach these to our bird-watching pages as soon as possible.

Another Gallery in the offing...
The Naturally...Crete a second gallery by Anastasios, is still in the works - long overdue and causing a couple of headaches because of colour match problems but it is progressing and will be worth the effort. If you can't wait. the book of the same name is readily available from bookstores.

Calendar Photo Galleries:
A new one every year! The 2006 gallery was, of course, the last calendar to go on-line (LINK). 2007 Calendar gallery is complete and awaiting finalising and upload. BUT, and (this one has really been well worth anyone's wait), the 2008 calendar topic finally became 'Wild Flowers of Crete' and the result superb! The gallery will follow shortly. There are no calendars left.....

GENERAL: There are now 17 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis; our own new wildlife gallery; the wild flowers; Chania; Mhlia traditional village; etc.. etc... etc.... And we have not even nearly started further new galleries for which the photography is now complete, including a WWII museum Gallery - watch this space!!

Creating our galleries entails a vast amount of work and is expensive on expertise, time, effort and not least money. Projects must be chosen; locations reached; photographs taken; pages developed... A great deal of printing is also involved. Why? Well...

...27000 plus (and rising) monthly unique visitor figures to Cretanvista websites were achieved last year. Reward in itself.
Taking nothing for granted, we are all hard at work - working on updates
and getting out and about - obtaining the new information and photographs we need to keep Cretanvista well to the forefront of websites about Crete. We treasure our visitors...Really!

We trying to build a specialist calendar of birds - whilst we are building our own library photographs - contributions are always welcome. They will always be acknowledged and copyright will remain your own.

Bird Watchers Extra Note - Paul Smith "Birwatching".

We have been working extremely hard attempting to fill the huge gap left by Paul's death last year. There is now reason to believe that we have succeeded in our quest.

Paul was a highly competent and often uncompromising diarist - even attempting to find another expert to fill his spot was, to say the least, a little daunting.

We now believe that, without revealing at this stage precisely who will, more than likely, be taking up the reins - let me just say that it looks certain to be an acknowledged expert.

Can this be you..... or yours... or mine?..
This Month - Wilf B.
Yet another interesting twist on the 'Can this be yours?' theme this month. Perhaps the recent earthquake and bad weather is now resulting in new plant evolution!! This amazing greenery arose from the sand just after builders began 'planting' new houses on the coastal strip on the immediate edge of the beach at Rapaniana, on the outskirts of Kolimbari. We wonder if it will grow as fast as the housing development, or will planting on sand have biblical results.  Answers on a postcard please, before somebody builds on it - the beach that is!

                                        A New Plant?...
Found on beach east of Kolimbari
Do you know the name of this plant?...

Until next month, best wishes from here on Crete. WB.
