A Village Life... "A lot of gas...canister"...
Our shiny, squeaky clean and absolutely unused gas fire sat in the middle of our living area smiling at me.  'Go on' it seemed to say, 'get a move on - I'll keep the place warm'...

We had just conveyed the latest version of what I had always considered a potentially lethal device from a store in Kastelli.  We had gone to the store, with our neighbour Anna, on the promise of a good discount from her 'cousin'. Intending to buy a standard gas fire. Beware of Greeks bearing gifts! The cousin had other ideas.

'This', he said, as we surveyed the standard (cheaper) unit, 'will kill you while you sleep'.  Better than whilst I am awake I thought, somewhat uncharitably perhaps, whilst waiting for his next move.  'This' says he turning to a space age cube with no pottery elements to burn the gas, 'is completely safe'.  It needs no 'solines' (chimney pipe) so you also keep all the heat!'  I was not really convinced, as our 'cousin' resembled Paul Daniels - and I kept getting a mental image of a mad magician with a chain saw.  Will the lady still be in one piece after he has cut her in half I wondered...

Well, not being a sissy, I had taken the bait. The wondrous, all automatic, set the dials and push the red button catalytic heater was now mine.  It sat smiling at me - 'go on, get a move on, push the red button...'  I did. Nothing....  'Did you fit the gas' asked my wife, 'it is a GAS fire'...

I had forgotten!  But now I remembered - and remembered also that we only had one gas bottle.  That was connected to the cooker.  A straight choice - food or keep warm!  I elected for both and went to our local village gas outlet, Petros, for a second bottle.  'Where is the empty?' he asked.  Well, I didn't have one did I....  'I can't give you a new bottle without an empty, you will have to buy one' he said.  I think.. (Greek is difficult)..  As it turned out I certainly didn't understand at all.  After much  discussion about half empty being the same (or not) as half full Petros gave up.  'Here' he said 'take a new bottle and bring me a replacement. Just pay me for the gas.'  Good. Done...

As it turned out I really was as confused as I thought I was... Think about it - I want a new gas bottle.  I try to buy one from Petros - who tells me that because I don't have one he can't sell me one, but gives me one on payment for the gas and tells me to buy another (presumably from elsewhere) and to give him that!  Why worry, just do it... An hour later I was warm; fed; and still fairly confused...

The heater said 'click', 'Bumphhh' and 'hiss' when I switched it on and pushed the red button.  There was no visible flame to warm your heart (or toes) or toast your bread with.  Just a dull orange glow, although it did give out enough heat to stop teeth chattering. Just - from 18inches...

Next day we bought the 'missing' gas bottle and delivered it to Petros.  A bit like coals to Newcastle I thought, but didn't want to even try that in Greek.  'How much is that' I asked.  '8.000 drachmae' he replied, 'you just pay for the gas'.  But I must pay for the bottle you gave me I protested.  'You have' he said.  'No' I argued, 'I only paid you for the gas - the bottle has a deposit and I must pay that too!'

The twinkle in Petro's  eyes were dancing.  His mouth curved slightly. His face creased in barely perceptible smile at the vision before him. This supposedly highly sophisticated Englishman obviously did not even reach, let alone pass, kindergarten level...  But a Cretan would not insult a friend and cause loss of face.  I know that now.  At the time I was adamant - no favours!  'And Pam wants three kilos of flour too'...

Out came a plastic bag, his grocers scoop swished in and out of the flour sack and he placed the bag on his ancient scales. And now I had him - I knew that he had only a one kilo weight... No way could he weigh 3 kilos!  Well, not without the 500gm bag of salt, five potatoes, three cans of tinned sardines and the bottle of beer that he added... Inwardly I was smirking.  'Gotcha, gotcha gotcha!......'   I almost ran home with the flour.  Zeroed the scales. Placed the bag on our English, electronic scales, ELECTRONIC scales - accurate to a gram...  And bingo - 3.000 grams...   But I asked for 3 Kilos!....Er..

Greece: Earthquake activity in Greece was considerably in excess of usual this month, with the Island of Zakynthos getting a severe shaking.  Only minor damages were reported, but having said that, it has to be remembered that some of the effects of large and damaging earthquakes in the recent past are not yet overcome, several years after the events....

Earthquakes are a common feature of life in Greece and rarely cause any damage. The problem is that the ones that do are unpredictable. Recent Greek research has indicated a continued advance in methods of prediction.
At least one professor (Vassilis Papazachos) believes that there will be at least 4 major earthquakes in the future.

A Little Extra News....

Paul Smith and his right hand man Sandra did a little guiding for an bird enthusiast from Holland (Anton Dujnhouer), who very kindly donated 50 Euros to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children (GOSH) in London. Because the Smiths refused payment and made the suggestion.  Magic really - they all get a day bird watching on Crete, while some sick children in (though not necessarily from) England end up better for it.  I can't personally think of a better way of working.

On the subject of giving, in the past we have given away a special edition of our website (impossible to buy) annual calendar - featuring our own photographs and individually hand made; held a special competition here on CV News (resulting in many eager entries from 'friends' and site visitors eager to give away my money); and even 'given' a lift to Chania Airport to a friend in exchange for such donations. Paul Daniels may have beaten this - but then he was a professional magician!

Special Children in Chania sometimes get benefit from Cretanvista activities too.  We donated a complete set of our specially produced framed A3 size original photographs of Crete to a local special school, (here in Chania) after they had been on display at a local art-loving dentist's surgery (Bob Manousakis).  The same source also resulted in a very welcome extra donation when we agreed to produce a set of special Christmas cards for one of Bob's patients....

However, we are not in business and will not compete with those who are - making a living can be difficult.  At the same time, when a chance comes along to contribute to those less fortunate, particularly children - we take it.  In both hands. And Run!!  Sometimes we get a goal....

What,  you might well ask, is in it for us?

Every member of the team who contribute to this site in some way does so at their own expense, using their own time, effort and expertise.  While doing so we all get a lot of pleasure out of what are our own areas of expertise and interest (the chance to be here on Crete; a little time to pursue our own special interests) while sometimes helping others in the process.

In short, we all get a lot of pleasure out of doing what we do!  Why not get a little more by helping others when the chance appears?  Better still, why not really get an extra helping of pleasure by, after helping someone else get enjoyment or assistance from our activities, they then help us feel even better by donating to our favoured charities.  Children...

And what give most pleasure to almost all adults, everywhere?  Dare I suggest the smile to the face of a child?  Maybe a sick or handicapped child?  Dare I suggest helping, just a little, to put it there....

Cretanvista, bringing the sunshine - keeping the rain off!..

We certainly have not been asleep!

Books & Good Reading - Latest Reviews.
Our latest book has been on line for a week or so now, 'Cretan Runner' by George Psychoundakis.  Ann Lisney, our reviewer has added 'The Cretan Runner' by George Psychoundakis to her reviews.

Read the review:-

Cretan Runner
.

George Psychoundakis. John Murray (Publishers) Ltd.

It is very well worth a look, or perhaps even a buy if the review appeals.  Not from us, but details of suppliers are on each review.

The people behind the books:  Every book review has an introductory paragraph about the author/s. We have decided to go a little further and where possible, include profiles of not only these talented authors but also, where we can, of people behind them.

Good examples are  'Patouchas' - Ioannis Kondylakis  (Read the review) and 'Who Pays The Ferryman' - Michael J. Bird (Read the  review)  These profiles will be attached to relevant book reviews.  Watch this space...

Photo Galleries  NEW MARCH 2006 additions..
Wild Flowers: Stands at 192 different wild flowers.
99% have been taken right here at the base of the Rodopos peninsula. We are continually working on these galleries and will soon been adding further pages, including detailed reference pages and more photos of each specimen. There are now more than 4,000+ flower photographs in our databases. The galleries will rise to 216 specimens shortly - an additional 24 already in the workshop! Detailed descriptions will follow soon.

Bird Galleries.
  NEW Gallery Page...
The first page of our first purely bird photograph gallery went on line on 26th March 2006. Colin Turvey (see February News) has now added a second page and we are now working hard on adding page 3 - more of Colin's bird photographs - a big plus for Cretanvista.

And More -
Athanasios Sakoulis, who contributed the magnificent gallery from his book on Cretan wildlife to our site Moments of Cretan Nature has now contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery. We will attach this to Paul Smith's bird-watching page in the near future.  Something worth waiting for... Just a little longer, we are very busy right now..

But that isn't all...
Anastasios Sakoulis has also given us permission (and supplied the photographs) to produce a gallery of his latest book. A book of 20 superb postcards of Cretan wildlife called Naturally... Crete. Ann Lisney will also be reviewing the book in the near future.  What can I say - another first en-route, watch this space!...

Special Gallery.
A first! Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a real photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete. Klaus has supplied photographs for this gallery which is now on-line here at Cretanvista. There will also be, of course, a review the book...

Insects..
We have built up an extensive collection of  photographs from which we are producing galleries for our wild life page.  The next of these will be insects - about which we have received few queries, but many of which are supremely photogenic.  We have some beautiful reptiles too...

GENERAL: There are now 13 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; and the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis, author of  "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" (Moments of Cretan Nature); our infant gallery about house renovation; and of course our annual calendar galleries containing 60 or so pictures of north western Crete about to increase by 12 - for 2005. The 2006 calendar gallery is en-route.

Visitors...
April saw 24,277 visitors to our sites.  17,287 to our British ISP and 6999 to our Greek ISP. We only count a visitor once in any month.  'Hits' are something else - from the visitors to our Greek site alone we generated 48,000 'hits'...  The figures are nice - they really mean that our hard work saw over 800 different people a day knock on our door - anyone for coffee?!!

What gives us a lot of pleasure is looking at the countries our visitors are in.  Where they are sat while (or stood) looking at our site...

52 countries! Whilst Europe and the USA are home to the vast majority of visitors, we have a small number from more distant locations - India; Indonesia; Australia, New Zealand; South Africa; Taiwan; South America - Peru; Columbia; Costa Rica; Mexico; and also from the Russian Federation!  Magic - Peru! Columbia! Costa Rica!
Over 200 Universities also provide visitors....

Every single visitor to our site is precious to us.  For the most part we will never know who you are or what you think of us.  Those who ask questions often provide us with new insights into what people want to see, why they visit Crete.  In some cases why they want to live and work here.  One or two get to meet one of our team - usually Paul Smith - our intrepid bird watching expert.  A popular person!

E-Mail Requests..
I receive some brilliant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.
Our response time is usually within 48 hours.

Personal Information..
We have been asked in the past to help locate people. We would love to be able to assist but regret that are unable to do this.  There is fuller comment in previous issues of CV News.

Questions and Answers..
Quite a lot of questions are received here at  Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

Guest Book.  E-mail links are accepted.  Website URL, Bulletin board and chat-room style links are not.  Website links are removed automatically to prevent inclusion of sites without agreement.

Book Reviews.
Because each book review is original - we steal nothing from the book covers or the reviews of others - it takes a little longer to deal with each.  No point our reviewing the reviews when what readers really want to know about is the content!

The Cretan Vista Calendar Photos - Birds.
We trying to build a specialist calendar of birds - whilst we are building our own library photographs - contributions are always welcome. They will always be acknowledged and copyright will remain your own.

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smith, our resident specialist on ornithology, last year underwent unexpected surgery for what was a fatal cancer.  We understand that his remarkable subsequent recovery is almost complete. APRIL DIARY on line at all Cretanvista URL's.

We remain deeply indebted to Han and Inger van der Lelie, 3815 PV Amersfoort, who enabled us to publish the June 2005 page of Paul's now unbroken series.

Can this be you.....or yours?.. This Month - Colin Turvey.
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be yours?
