JULY WEATHER ....
A Scorcher -  A fire maker.
Late 30C - early 40's Centigrade continue unabated - a sun-trapped balcony on a white house can sometimes reach 50C and fire fighting, including aircraft, an everyday event. Sometimes very windy. Fire-fighting produces visible fogs.....

Astratigos Village Life -
Pamela's House.
Our house here, better known as 'Pamela's House', seems to have been constructed, I thought, more of bits that you open than bits that stay closed!...Read on..

It all started with the sudden realization that Pamela's House seemed to be full of holes. Holes in walls that is. I mean, when we re-built the house, just how much of our time and money went on space? On nothing? into the void!! Vanished. Like characters in a Carpenter Sci-Fi novel...

I did a quick check - 17 doorways (7 outer including  2 double, and 10 inner. Add 12 window openings (8 double, 4 single) and the space soon adds up. Well, not quickly - it took me half a day to actually add it up. 'Soon' is a metaphor. An unbelievable total of around 457 square metres of nothing! 'That must be at least half a football field I thought. Pass the slide rule, leave the ball on the pitch...

Getting into the spirit, the swing ('swing' not 'swig' - counting needs a clear head!) I decided to include a check on the plastered area. Was there, my curiosity wondered, a difference between the stated (and paid for) area and the actual plaster? It had to have all those holes in it too - otherwise the holes would have been covered over and there would have been nowhere to put all those doors and windows..... Logic! The space had to exist, I had to be right..

I calculated everything. Outside wall areas. Inside wall areas. Window and doorway relief area (the bit that joins the outside to the inside) - commonly known as thickness or depth... Tape measures swished and clicked whilst pencils overheated the paper they raced over as the seriously astonishing results built up. The plastered area included the holes...

Built up - now there's a contradiction in terms. I was calculating what was there in order to show what wasn't... In order to show that 'nothing' really did exist and had been erroneously paid for. Built up nothing! Forensic accounting!  Or mental aberration..

'Mental aberration to you too' I thought - thinking about the agent who I had dealt with and whom I had paid, I believed, for a good deal of nothing, 'mental aberration to you too'...  I was in the land of Plato, and was he not the greatest of the great philosophers? Or was I somewhere else completely and Plato a Greek painter and decorator?

No, I told myself, I was here and Plato was the greatest of the great philosophers. I remembered Archdeacon - my philosophy tutor at University. I had once expressed concern about possibly being faced with a question I could not answer in my first degree finals... 'Just get cracking', he had said cheerfully, 'prove that the question isn't there!' Thus sustained I had passed... Thus sustained I was now going to prove that 'nothing' did not exist - that it was just 'nothing' and that I had paid for it with real money!! Something for nothing? Never!

I had bent my brain - what remained of it anyway, inside out and backwards. A few mental somersaults and now I had it - 457 metres of nothing.  What happened when I approached the agent was like an episode from 'Fawlty Towers'.....

'Yes, I've been thinking about this' says he - 'I think that you owe me about 5 grand!'  'Not likely'  I proffered, 'it's the other way round - apart from selling me holes, you even charged your percentage on your percentage that I had already paid!'

'Ah that' he said 'we agreed that my percentage was on the whole bill every month.'  'Yes'  I replied, 'but you had already included your percentage in the monthly figures - and also on the VAT and National insurance (IKA) - it's illegal to add those to  your percentage.'  'Oh' he replied 'I had better ask Jennifer - she's good at figures!'  Not in your league I muttered to myself...  It turned out that I was owed 800 pounds (he said). I gave permission to spend it on balcony railings. In the event it was spent, he said later, on superior plaster!

I've examined every hole and I still can't find it!!

In the News... Reviews..

Samaria Gorge claims two lives...
Not for the first time, Europe's longest and perhaps most famous gorge showed it's other face. Polish 37 year old Mark Sawica and his 40 year old sister Danuta, part of a tour group, were missing in the gorge for 5 days, despite an intensive search. Danuta was already dead and her bother died shortly after they were found...

Very lucky. Cars end up inexplicably in Cretan harbours every year. This lucky Dutch 24 year old survived...

But the heat wave kills others...
The direct effects of the recent high temperatures on the elderly and weak are well known.  Air pollution, alcohol, sun-bathing and strenuous exercise in extreme conditions all carry risk...

Just seem to keep right on coming, including right here to Crete. Airport arrivals In Iraklion (Heraklion) are shown to be second only to Athens and beat both Rhodes and Corfu!                Link to Story.

Is 'Free Cash' the attraction? ...
Most likely not, but it seems there for the taking... though the eventual reward may be a Cretan jail - especially if someone is injured.                   (Item 7) Link to Story.

A Little Extra News

Once again what at first appeared to be a quiet news month here on Crete quickly warmed up - apace with the soaring temperatures - to match anything the weather could bring.  Our news reviews only contain what we feel are the most significant - there really is so much more we cannot include in the actual news column. Hence we have a little extra in which items of a more general nature (not less important) can be mentioned. About anywhere in Greece...

Among the things that caught my eye. Particularly comment associated with promoting tourism in Greece - which of course includes Crete - and continuing debate about whether the government's current aims will result in harm to the environment and cultural heritage for the sake of financial considerations. Link.

The government's Special Tourism Zoning Report is reported to have attracted opposition from groups fighting to protect the  environment and cultural heritage of Greece. The Hellenic Society for the Protection of the environment and Cultural Heritage to seek withdrawal of the report.  The main arguments appear to centre around the seeking of short term gain (money) against sustainable tourism development.  Golf courses and the building of whole villages (Dare I suggest including swimming pools) by companies does not seem to gain much support. The link above is well worth a read.

Also worth a read are the objections of a town planner - Nikiforos Balatsinos - who apparently feels that the joint ministerial decision on the proposal for the Tourism Zoning Report does 'not  reflect then work he and his associates carried out' - an indictment of the government response he made in an EOC interview. Another enthralling read for anyone concerned about protecting culture and the environment.  Link.

Perhaps one of the most important quandaries right now concerns whether or not to demolish two protected houses on Dionysos Areopagitou, next to the new Acropolis museum, in order to create a 'visual association' between the Parthenon and it's museum. The argument Link and the opposition Link.  I visit here regularly - a very beautiful area. But I would not like, at all, to have to judge...

A Little Site News.
Top spot this month.
Goes to Ann Lisney, our principal book  reviewer, with her latest on Cretan and Greek cookery. Everybody else was working too hard to notice Ann slip past!  Link.

And what to date isn't at all bad -
judging by the 27000 plus (and rising) monthly unique visitor figures to Cretanvista websites.  But taking nothing for granted, we are all hard at work - working on updates and getting out and about - obtaining the new information and photographs we need to keep Cretanvista well to the forefront of websites about Crete. *Two new galleries - our nature gallery and the WWII museum at Askyfou are progressing well. We treasure our visitors...Really!

Since last month's news we have covered a lot of miles, bounding about on the Rodopos peninsula - to Agia Ioannis and back to Kolimbari; re-visiting villages such as Mhlia (and re-tasting the very excellent food there); taking the Kastelli ferry (complete with car) to Githio on the Peloponnese - exactly as outlined in our pages, and if you have ever wondered - yes we do drive to all the places we feature, including the UK, regularly. The next trip is imminent...

Cretan Art and crafts - Weaving...
Our updated hand-weaving page is now on-line. This revision includes the first full project - start to finish!  A beautiful traditional craft producing beautiful products. And much more to follow. *Weaving is in full swing and dyes are being made up and the photographs taken to add to this section.

Photo Galleries
Bird Galleries
:  Gallery Page 4 Online...
The first pages of our bird photograph gallery went on line in March 2006. Colin Turvey's Cretan Bird-Life photograph gallery (see February 2006 News) now has a fourth page. We are now working hard on adding page 5 - another 12 of Colin's bird photographs - which will bring the number up to 60 so far. A big plus for Cretanvista. *And we now have more of Colin's 'photos - though he did send some recently (really) - of an Boeing F18 Hornet jet fighter!! A rather different 'Bird'.....

Wild Flowers
: Now 216 different wild flowers.
99% of photos have been taken right here at the base of the Rodopos peninsula. We are continually working on these galleries and will, as soon as practicable, be adding further online pages, including detailed reference pages and more photos of each specimen. We will be publishing our book - but all the information will remain on line. *More photographs are now being added.

Cretan Countryside:
The basic page is already on-line - has been so for some time.  In the background we have been busy collecting more photographs and will very soon be publishing the first gallery. There really is some superb wild life on Crete.

No Change - Still in line.
Anastasios Sakoulis, who contributed the magnificent gallery from his book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature to our site,  contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery some time ago now. We will attach this to Paul Smith's bird-watching page as soon as possible.

But that isn't all...
Anastasios has also given us permission (and supplied the photographs) to produce a gallery of his latest book. A book of 20 superb postcards of Cretan wildlife called Naturally... Crete

Miniature Chapels of Crete.
A first!
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a real photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete. Klaus has supplied photographs for this gallery which is now on-line here at Cretanvista. There will also be, of course, a review the book - which we have already. Klaus is not keen on that as the book is not publicly available, but we hope to persuade him!

*Klaus assures us that his Chania photographs are imminent - if all goes well we will be publishing these very soon now.

Calendar Photo Galleries:
A new one every year! The 2006 gallery is, of course, on-line (LINK) and the 2007 Calendar gallery is as good as complete. We are already arguing the topic selection for this year's 2008 gallery!

GENERAL: There are now 13 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; and the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis, author of  "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" (Moments of Cretan Nature); our infant gallery about house renovation; and of course our annual calendar galleries containing 60 or so pictures of north western Crete about to increase by 12 - for 2007.

E-Mail Requests..
We receive some brilliant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.
Our response time is usually within 48 hours.

Personal Information..
We have been asked in the past to help locate people. We would love to be able to assist but regret that are unable to do this.

Questions and Answers..
Quite a lot of questions are received here at  Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

The Cretan Vista Calendar Photos - Birds.
We trying to build a specialist calendar of birds - whilst we are building our own library photographs - contributions are always welcome. They will always be acknowledged and copyright will remain your own.

(Please email us before sending pictures).

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smith's JULY page will be on line at all Cretanvista URL's Shortly. Paul wants all readers to know that extra hospital visits and scorchingly hot weather have simply conspired to prevent his bird watching during the month. The only occasion this has happened since August 2001 - when his page was published compliments of  Han and Inger van der Lelie, 3815 PV Amersfoort, who enabled us to publish the (June 2005) page. Paul's series has otherwise remained unbroken.  A resume of his July sightings from previous years July is being produced now.

We are working on a solution to this particular indebtedness, not just hoping that one will pop out of the Cretan countryside!  We had hoped that perhaps Han and Inger would return to Crete - we know that Paul would just love to meet the couple who took over his page - and then skipped the country whilst he was still hospitalised!

We would love to know how their bird watching has progressed since this starlit beginning......

Can this be you.....or yours?.. This Month - Wilf B.
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be yours?
