SEPTEMBER WEATHER ...
Very, very changeable in September. Beautiful sunny days (and nights) varying erratically with severe storms - which have the ability to spoil holidays, although the good days should have offset this for all but avid sun-seekers during the month.

Astratigos Village Life...
....of road works and refrigerators!

Getting on for 13 years ago we met 'Lorenz' - a shiny new Italian super- everything refrigerator, and oh, what a boon it has been. All these years and never a murmur of complaint.. Until an unknown arrived in the village square driving a tractor pushing a huge brush. Dust storms to order....  He was of course a forerunner, which should have warned me!

Shortly before the arrival of Lorenz, all those years ago, another unknown man arrived in the same square and proceeded to spray paint lines on the road - which runs at right angles to our lane. Shortly after that arrived the workmen - with JCB's..  They dug a metre wide channel about a metre deep along the white lines - effectively blockading our lane and all within it. Which includes us, our neighbours and the dog... Shortly after that our new fridge arrived..... Which is how it came about that the men from OTE, the telephone company, delivered and fitted 'Lorenz' - our first fridge.  But that's another story. This one starts with the second stranger and his tractor/brush
...

Dressed like some sort of early space explorer, including gas mask, he proceeded to brush the road into the village, the square, and the road out of the village - creating huge dust storms which then settled so that he could brush them up again! Really. It was just about then that our fridge failed (no connection - other than an about to happen co-incidence).

We promptly searched Kastelli and Chania for a replacement. 'Lorenz' was no longer around. Now 'Eskimo' was everywhere, including Seios store in Chania, where the salesman responded to my every query - Reliability? Economy? Greeness? Cost? - with a beaming smile and immediate "Don't wooorry!'..... When I said that was precisely what I was beginning to do he just lost interest and wandered away - presumably he wasn't worried. We wandered away too...

A few shops away we found 'Nordton' as tall as me and looking very, very smart and functional. The sales lady - I presumed the shops owner, showed us everything on both floors, offered us coffee and the clincher - allowed me to use the toilet! Greek toilets are often hidden, even from Greeks! Draw your own conclusions. This one was superb! Including the washing in the sink... Well, it was Monday...

We bought, all questions being fully answered, the lady's husband assigned to deliver and introductions made to every other customer who entered! This, we realised, was a family business. We were becoming family! I was beginning to wonder if the family was Italian and the family name began with an M....  Trying to complete the formalities (getting a receipt), took nearly an hour. But the entertainment was unbeatable! Meeting every newcomer and listening to the family news was amazing.... As was Yiorgos..

Yiorgos (a customer) was not amused. His wife, he informed us all solemnly, was pregnant. His serious expression and clear grey eyes made me sympathize -
all Greeks celebrate children, so what was the problem?  Twins, replied Yiorgos, Twins!... 'Oh, I see..' I responded - wondering whether two could not live as cheaply as one..  Isn't that good'?  'Good?' he repeated, 'Good?' The clear grey eyes held mine in a steady gaze, as if pondering whether I was genuine or making mirth. 'No', he replied.. 'it is not good - especially at her age'...

If Ignorance is bliss then stupidity  has to be something better. Either way (either/or) I qualified 110%.... No question...

'How old is she'? I queried politely.  'Sixty nine', he replied, locking eyes and daring me to laugh! 'Sixty-nine'...

'Ummm, I see. Could be a problem'.. Yiorgo's gaze did not waver.  I felt that I was playing Russian Roulette, Master Class style, and that Yiorgos was an unbeaten master!

Stepping mentally sideways, I said 'I am a 27 years old 63 myself'... The gaze remained.. Maybe, I thought uncomfortably, either number, probably the latter, could be my shoe size..  'Ah - 90' said Yiorgos, face creasing into a grin. 'A good man'... 'This is a good shop.. good.. your fridge will last'... And with that he departed home.

How old is Yiorgos, I asked our sales lady.  'A grand 88' she replied, 'and very good at numbers'..  I began to wonder about mine - he had said that I was 90 and that the fridge would last.  Just how long, I wondered, would it last?

There was an obvious way to find out - check the guarantee!  5 years on most parts, 2 years on others was the conclusion... That would make me 95 at least on departure - with maybe some bits falling off a little earlier! Not bad, I mean, since I am only 27 (maybe 63) then the fridge should last...

It arrived next morning, as arranged, at 11 am.  The stranger with the tractor arrived back at 9am - complete with tarmac and the road surfacing gang! I telephoned OTE....

A Little Extra News - Smart Car....
The hero returns! To the winner the spoils! Having just driven back across Europe again - UK to Crete, that is precisely what I intended. The problem turned out to be that while there were plenty of spoils in the boot, my own very special goodies were still at the family home in the UK! Well done Wilf! Superb driving. Smart car....

And cars really are getting much smarter - auto gearboxes, power steering and brakes, air conditioning, computer controlled engines, satellite navigation - even, we are now informed, cars that self-park; self-steer and prevent drivers crashing them. Oh, and cars that report themselves stolen and their subsequent location so that we can have high-speed police chases - just to relieve the boredom of having nothing else to do whilst driving!! You can watch the chases on the TV's fitted into the back of the rear seats - even record them on the video...

Well, I'm a little bit cautious... One advert (for a car) on British TV tells me that I the average Briton is recorded by a security CCTV camera over 300 times whilst out and about. Fine by me - stardom at last! But wait, who is looking and what for?  The authorities are looking - apparently to catch criminals and deter terrorists. To catch speeding motorists. Erratic drivers (drink/drug drivers and elderly ladies). To recognize the number plates of car tax dodgers. Prevent pedophiles snatching kids. Drunks or the mentally ill attacking taxi drivers or kidnapping unwary drivers. The list is endless...

My solution? Get a 'Smart Car'...

Think about it.. Iris recognition entry cuts out keys and tells you who you are (not who you think you are). Seats and controls automatically adjust to you size and weight. Doors automatically lock (foils attackers/bag snatchers and stops you falling out). Auto-breathalyser checks for drink/drugs before enabling engine start (saves you from you). Auto satnav demands destination, calculates fuel costs (checks the state of your bank account) and assesses safety systems before taking you there (whilst you watch TV). Auto everything prevents a crash (makes everything safe and sends for emergency services if you do manage it). If you don't you will be parked safely at your destination.

Just a couple of drawbacks in Utopia - the cost of all this will be calculated and automatically deducted from your bank account - including auto- penalties for any transgressions of the law which you have managed to make en-route. After all, the car can't be to blame...

Meanwhile, back at sanity, the Greek police have just been fined 3,000 Euros for pointing CCTV cameras at people and buildings rather than traffic in Athens - illegal here. But what else could they use them for - 'Smart Car' is taking care of everything else - including your transport to prison for serious traffic violations and non-payment of fines!

Photo Galleries
Bird Galleries.
  Gallery Page 4 pending...
The first pages of our bird photograph gallery went on line in March 2006. Colin Turvey's Cretan Bird-Life photograph gallery (see February News) has now added a third page. We are now working hard on adding page 4 - another 12 of Colin's bird photographs - which will bring the number up to 48 so far. A big plus for Cretanvista.

Wild Flowers: 192 different wild flowers. 99% of photos have been taken right here at the base of the Rodopos peninsula. We are continually working on these galleries and will, as soon as practicable, be adding further online pages, including detailed reference pages and more photos of each specimen. There are now more than 4,000+ flower photographs in our databases. Right now it is all work and no new pages on-line. Apologies.

Cretan Countryside:
The basic page is already on-line - has been so for some time.  In the background we have been busy collecting more photographs and will very soon be publishing the first gallery. There really is some superb wild-life on Crete.

And More -

Anastasios Sakoulis, who contributed the magnificent gallery from his book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature to our site,  has also contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery. We will attach this to Paul Smith's bird-watching page in the near future.

But that isn't all...
Anastasios Sakoulis has also given us permission (and supplied the photographs) to produce a gallery of his latest book. A book of 20 superb postcards of Cretan wildlife called Naturally... Crete

Miniature Chapels of Crete.
A first!
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a real photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete. Klaus has supplied photographs for this gallery which is now on-line here at Cretanvista. There will also be, of course, a review the book - which we have already. Klaus is not keen on that as the book is not publicly available, but we hope to persuade him!

He is working on some photographs of Chania and if all goes well we will be publishing these.

Calendar Photo Galleries:
A new one every year! The 2006gallery is, of course, on-line (LINK) and the 2007 Calendar is as good as complete. Having already printed the first proof we can safely say that it is developing well and will be on-schedule.

GENERAL: There are now 13 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; and the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis, author of  "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" (Moments of Cretan Nature); our infant gallery about house renovation; and of course our annual calendar galleries containing 60 or so pictures of north western Crete about to increase by 12 - for 2005.
