Astratigos Village Life....(continued from last month).... Link

So there I still was...
Still sporting my best and brand new (well, still only hours old!) paralysed right arm and leg, but now, having gone to hospital voluntarily, the situation seemed to be deteriorating. No one wanted me to go home. That I wanted to didn't seem to be within the hearing range of anyone else!

Then things, including me, my wife and my friends moved rapidly.  I don't really remember who started the race. One minute I was lying comfortably on the examination couch - the next I was been driven (as only Greeks can drive) out of the Emergency room, along corridors, into a lift, more corridors and finally into the male 'Pathology' ward, four floors above! Most definitely not my interpretation of 'I want to go home now'...

Accepting that Greek seems a difficult language for many English people - 'Pathology' is what happens after you are dead.  Yet here I was, already examined by a 'Pathologist' who had sent me to the male 'Pathology' ward! No one seemed to have been able to hear my polite requests to go home - or - sweet Jesus - maybe it had been interpreted as 'Departure'.. Was I already on my way? Was the 'Pathologist' on his? Was I dead?....

Nektarios appeared in the wake of the trolley and in no time had me hooked up to a (excuse the pun) heady mix of intravenous drugs. Or - a sudden unwelcome flash of (distorted) insight - he was the 'pathologist'    - maybe he was embalming me already!! But then I realized that that would be the undertaker, not the pathologist.... And since a pathologist would not need to give an anesthetic, I must be still alive... Good thinking....

I was hospitalized for four days only. But four days is a while when nurses only give drugs. Your family (or a hired nurse) must care for you in hospital!  No sweat, my wife Pam is a highly qualified, albeit retired, nurse. She took the first night and all the next day, after which our Cretan friend Adonis arrived to take the night shift. Nothing like a telephone engineer to look after you when in hospital.

Adonis was superb... I wanted for nothing and he did not eat my stafylia (grapes). Because he was also working in the day he had brought his camp bed and blanket.  Then he went to sleep by my bedside. Within easy earshot but not reach.  I was still propped up by the adjustable bed head. Until just after he reached slumberland that is...

I began to slide gently down the bed as the sheet lost it's grip on the shiny waterproof mattress cover beneath.  'Adonis'.... 'ZZzzzz'.
'Adonis'.... 'ZZZzzzZzzzz'.  'ADONIS'..... He just grunted, turned over and slumbered on!

I was now so far down the bed that I could use my good leg on the bottom bed rail to stop the slide, but as my leg weakened I began to double in the middle as my weight pushed inexorably down...  Being an experienced 'hospitalier' I recognized my predicament and knew the answer. Simple. The call system. Push the button, get assistance... The button, of course was on the panel on the wall behind my bed - but the extension button was right here with me - in the bed. Under my back, assisting my propulsion downwards like a round pole under a board. With the button right next to my paralytic hand!

By 6am I was desperate. Contorted. Wanted a wee! Exhausted with muscles screaming - the ones that worked anyway. An then - salvation. Adonis awoke...

He rolled off his camp bed, stood up, yawned and stretched, arms above his head - and before I could decipher his Greek - 'Good morning, looks a nice day, I'm just going to the canteen to get a coffee, back soon' - he was gone! People leaving quickly was becoming a familiar feature of my predicament. First the Neurologist, now Adonis....

Two angels arrived. No, not the sort with wings. The sort with nurse's uniforms - complete with nurses still in them. Like night nurses the world over they were making a final check before going off duty. I was flipped upright and straightened, my bed-head dropped flat. At last I was able to lie down! And it was only daybreak! Maybe I would survive after all.....My drip was still dripping so I couldn't be dead.

'Good morning, how are you'? Adonis had returned... Malice aforethought I saw my chance.. 'Had a good night'? I sought... 'Yes Ok' he replied, 'You'?...

'Fine' I lied, 'but I need a bottle'.  'Oh'. 'Oh, a bottle' he replied, bright as a new button! The thought was increasing my desperation. 'I'll get one' he said, and was gone......

To be continued next month....

APRIL WEATHER ....
Improved rapidly over the month. There were some very cold, very wet and a smaller number of very, very stormy days. But by the end of the month you could well be forgiven for believing that spring is here and summer just around the corner.....

In the News... Reviews..
Odysseas alive and well...

The original Odysseus survived too..

Plus Samaria Gorge reopens ....

Cretan olive oil reigns supreme...

And you might be forgiven for thinking...
that the possible talks on loan to Greece of the Parthenon (Acropolis) marbles might just be a case of double jeopardy! (Possible talks.. possible loan).  But it might just happen. Might just save a few faces. Might correct an injustice without admitting  such ever existed! Cross your heart and hope to die.....

A Little Extra News
Well late again. My record remaining unblemished and as far as I know unchallenged. Forget all about early worms - they taste absolutely awful... Go for the old wine, for which you have to wait. But don't wait too long. Here why....

Last month, right here, I said "The countryside here in Nomos Chanion began to bloom in abundance. Almost a game of 'You name a flower - I'll show you a real display"...

Well, call it a psychic phenomenon. Call it the third eye. Call it tempting fate. Call it famous last words. But whatever you are doing to make yourself late, get it done and get back to work by April 30th. Or Cretan countryside blooming or no you won't have a flower to show! Or the again maybe you will....

I took a couple of photographs - before and after. I would go back in a day or so and take the third. The Mulein in full glorious flower. It would not look the same. Or or perhaps, more accurately, I should say that the plant will now never be the same. Ever again!

No prizes for guessing what had happened. No prizes, promises or free gifts. I was late, that's what happened.

On April 28th I took a photograph of this superb example of an almost fully displaying Mullein. But I was a little late in the day and the flowers were past their best. I vowed to return early next day (29th April) but was late again... I also missed on the 30th...

I did return early on May 1st - but, until I realized that  someone had beaten me too it,  I thought that I had simply missed it and went back for a double take.  The reality was that it had gone - cut down in it's prime. I was too late! Late again...  But I was to see it again a few days later...

Hanging over the doorway of a local Taverna. Upside down, large beautiful stem curved into a loop - back on itself, with a large piece of garlic handing down below!

A May Day lucky omen the owner said.. 'Mullein' I muttered.

A Little Site News - But no new additions this month...

But what we already have isn't at all bad -
judging by the 27000 plus (and rising) monthly unique visitor figures to Cretanvista websites.  But taking nothing for granted, we are all hard at work - working on updates and getting out and about - obtaining the new information and photographs we need to keep Cretanvista well to the forefront of websites about Crete. Two new galleries - our nature gallery and the WWII museum at Askifou are progressing well. We treasure our visitors...Really!

Cretan Art and crafts - Weaving...
Our updated hand-weaving page is now on-line. This revision includes the first full project - start to finish!  A beautiful traditional craft producing beautiful products. And much more to follow.

Photo Galleries
Bird Galleries
:  Gallery Page 4 Online...
The first pages of our bird photograph gallery went on line in March 2006. Colin Turvey's Cretan Bird-Life photograph gallery (see February 2006 News) now has a fourth page. We are now working hard on adding page 5 - another 12 of Colin's bird photographs - which will bring the number up to 60 so far. A big plus for Cretanvista.

Wild Flowers
: Now 216 different wild flowers.
99% of photos have been taken right here at the base of the Rodopos peninsula. We are continually working on these galleries and will, as soon as practicable, be adding further online pages, including detailed reference pages and more photos of each specimen. We will be publishing our book - but all the information will remain on line.

Cretan Countryside:
The basic page is already on-line - has been so for some time.  In the background we have been busy collecting more photographs and will very soon be publishing the first gallery. There really is some superb wild life on Crete.

March has seen the Cretan countryside continue it's very, very, early Start.  It seems that almost every wild flower on Crete is in bloom. The birds and the bees, to say nothing of the beetles and lizards abound. The sheep are being moved to their summer pastures.  The previously tiny bouncing lambs and goat kids are now growing rapidly. The Sun shined most of the time!

No Change - Still in line.
Anastasios Sakoulis, who contributed the magnificent gallery from his book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature to our site,  has also contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery. We will attach this to Paul Smith's bird-watching page in the near future.

But that isn't all...
Anastasios Sakoulis has also given us permission (and supplied the photographs) to produce a gallery of his latest book. A book of 20 superb postcards of Cretan wildlife called Naturally... Crete

Miniature Chapels of Crete.
A first!
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a real photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete. Klaus has supplied photographs for this gallery which is now on-line here at Cretanvista. There will also be, of course, a review the book - which we have already. Klaus is not keen on that as the book is not publicly available, but we hope to persuade him!

Klaus is working on some photographs of Chania and if all goes well we will be publishing these.

Calendar Photo Galleries:
A new one every year! The 2006 gallery is, of course, on-line (LINK) and the 2007 Calendar gallery is as good as complete. We are already arguing the topic selection for this year's 2008 gallery!

GENERAL: There are now 13 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; and the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis, author of  "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" (Moments of Cretan Nature); our infant gallery about house renovation; and of course our annual calendar galleries containing 60 or so pictures of north western Crete about to increase by 12 - for 2007.

Meanwhile, with the commencement of the holiday season upon us, we will be out and about with our cameras. Watch this space - you might just be in it!!

E-Mail Requests..
We receive some brilliant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.
Our response time is usually within 48 hours.

Personal Information..
We have been asked in the past to help locate people. We would love to be able to assist but regret that are unable to do this.

Questions and Answers..
Quite a lot of questions are received here at  Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

Guest Book.  E-mail links are accepted.  Website URL, Bulletin board and chat-room style links are not.  Website links are removed automatically to prevent inclusion of sites without agreement.

The Cretan Vista Calendar Photos - Birds.
We trying to build a specialist calendar of birds - whilst we are building our own library photographs - contributions are always welcome. They will always be acknowledged and copyright will remain your own.

(Please email us before sending pictures).

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smith's APRIL is on line at all Cretanvista URL's.

We remain deeply indebted to Han and Inger van der Lelie, 3815 PV Amersfoort, who enabled us to publish the June 2005 page of Paul's unbroken series.

BUT, we are now working on a solution to this particular indebtedness, not just hoping that one will pop out of the Cretan countryside!  We had hoped that perhaps Han and Inger would return to Crete - we know that Paul would just love to meet the couple who took over his page - and then skipped the country whilst he was still hospitalised!

We would love to know how the bird watching has progressed since this starlit beginning......

Can this be you.....or yours?.. This Month - Wilf B.
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be you?
