OCTOBER WEATHER ...
Continued, like September to be very, very changeable. A few beautiful sunny days (and nights) varying erratically with severe storms - which had the ability to spoil holidays, damage homes and wash cars into the sea. predictably unpredictable....

       Recent Storm - Kastelli Harbour

Kastelli Storm                    © C.Turvey@Cretanvista

Another recent storm this time pictured at Kastelli Harbour - Kissamos. There was considerable damage on the north western coast of Crete..

Astratigos Village Life...

Thrummm, thrummm, thrummm, Pissshht!
Well, that really was the very loud noise which appeared one morning recently. Just after the bakers van arrived in the square delivering our daily bread, so to speak.

And it appeared to be moving. The noise not the bread that is. The bread always moves rapidly as the baker does not want it to cool too much over it's 5 Kilometer journey from Kolimbari. But this noise was not the baker.. It came from around the bend at the village entrance - the place all eyes were turned to as the sound moved inexorably towards the corner. And then, there it was. A huge yellow- painted truck with flashing lights on the front and large 'overtake this side' arrows on the rear. Thrummm, thrummm, thrummm, Pissshht!

It seemed to be following in the tracks of our baker - like a triffid following an ice-cream van with it's chimes switched on! The bakers' van blocked it. Thrummm, thrummm, thrummm, Pissshht! Pissshht! Pissshht!

Our neighbour Eleni gazed, in what could, in other circumstances, have been fatal fascination at this machination of some far off bureaucratic mentality. 'Ti enai?' (what is it?) she asked without taking her eyes from the beast - 'Ti enai?' It took a little while to figure out, until someone noticed a broad white trail snaking along the roadside behind it....

What was it? A white lining machine, no less. Painting a broad line along the edge of the road like some overgrown ink-jet printer on wheels - Thrummm, thrummm, thrummm, Pissshht! With each 'Pissshht!' a broad rectangle of brilliant white was added to the end of the previous one, drawing (forgive the pun) Astratigos, which has sat quietly here since Minoan times - well, Venetian anyway - firmly forward into the 21st century.

At each side turning - usually a driveway - the machine sort of hiccoughed several times as it passed the opening - Pissshht! Pissshht! Pissshht! Pissshht!- leaving behind a broken line - presumably to allow entry and exit, before continuing on.

Half an hour later it returned from the direction in which it had it had disappeared, now drawing a line down the opposite side of the road. 'Side' that is, until it reached the church.  At that point it veered away wildly towards the middle of the square - presumably to allow parking outside the church. Either that or it was a vampire....

It was then that the puzzled looks became smiles.... The machine sprayed the paint. Over anything beneath.  Sticks, stones, gravel and the Sahara sand so recently deposited on the newly laid tarmac by the wind and rains were all being sprayed where they lay. Very white. Very neat. But of course when you moved any of the debris the white line - most of it anyway - went with it!

A lot of it has of course dried and set all things it touched like glue. I suspect that in a few thousand years time a David Attenborough look-alike will be on some futuristic TV - perhaps simply appearing in thin air before his viewers - declaring that the ancient Astratigonians preserved their valuables in this white material they called 'chroma' (colour), but that all that remains after so long are a few sticks and stones!!

Come to think of it - and judging by his present performances, David himself might still be around.....Think of that - a three thousand year-old David Attenborough....

Back to the present. Intrigued by the possible costs of this white-lining, and the space age technology involved, we tried to work out the benefits of this modernisations of ancient Crete to it's modern dwellers....

There are, right now, around 30 people resident in Astratigos, though with the arrival of visiting relatives; the baker; the doctor; the occasional fish merchant; shoe and clothes sales vans; the yoghurt man (and the school bus driver) etc, this can rise to 59!! However, usually, the thirty of us, our seven or so cars (plus a couple of tractors) have around 2Km of white line and two road signs (village entry and exit signs) to share between us - easily enough to go around! That doesn't include the 80 or so sheep..

'
But what's it for persisted Eleni.. What's it for?'... I knew the answer, I'd heard it years ago at Kolimbari crossroads - it's for the tourists!  But that was before their white lines disappeared....

In the News ....

In Greece, good news starts early...
Chania's own tennis star 24 tear old Eleni Daniilidou won the Korean Open, (and $145.000 US) is spite of injury, at Seoul Olympic Park, Korea. Magic!  Link to Story.

Even an airliner hijack ending safely..
Even though the plane was escorted by fighters - from Greece to Albania to Italy - all ended well in Brindisi. All caused, apparently, by a decision by the Pope!
                                           Link to Story.

But the bad news also starts early ....
As October 11 saw a British tourist reported to have been charged with the attempted murder of his girlfriend after pushing her from their first floor balcony in Malia, Crete...                                Link to Story.
                           Plus

Injured girlfriend survived, but...
The injured Sarah Maskell was due  to fly home by air-ambulance, having lost her unborn child and suffered lung punctures and other injuries. The boyfriend, Michael Edwards, was in police custody on Crete...              Link to Story.

Britons die in Crete and Rhodes...
In a week of storms and bad weather which also killed two Cretans...      Link to Story.

And British children die in Corfu...
The tragic deaths of seven year old Christianne Shepherd and her brother Robert, six, at the Louis Corcyra Beach Hotel complex in Corfu dominated headlines both in Greece and the UK..  Link to Story.

Leading to anguish for all...
Which was best summarized by this 'Daily Telegraph newspaper story.  Link to Story.

And ends in grief and criminal charges..
As the hotel licence is suspended and police charges, but the anguish lingers on...
                                            Link to Story.

And bad news didn't end there...
As 'Kathimerini' news of 23rd October reported two more cases of child trauma in Chania, Crete. One dead one injured...

Link to story.

Whilst 23rd brought more bad news ...
As two Albanians were arrested for murder on Crete...

Whilst cannabis plants flourish...
About 32.000 to be precise, around half that number from remote mountain areas on Crete...                          Link to story.

Then, foreign insurgents to the rescue!!
First, invade Crete. Second, decide what is wrong. Third put it right..... Well, the third might prove a little tricky - but at least here on Crete you will be allowed to try. But be aware - you certainly won't be the first. Over the last few thousand years....
                                            Link to story.

And it can be confusing here.. ...
When incoming international flights to Athens land at Iraklion and domestic flights to Chania and Iraklion return to Athens without landing - and some flights are just stuck in Thessaloniki. All because of fog which keeps moving! which may be the result of pollution. Which may be the result of increasing air traffic.

Or Pollution...                       Link to story.

A Little Extra News - all bad, some very, very sad....

I really didn't want to write this column this month. In some respects I just wish that this month just had not happened, or that we could turn back the clocks and do it again....

On Crete the storms claimed two lives - an English resident and a truck driver caught by impossible conditions both died. Many buildings on the north coast were badly damaged. Almirida, where many British residents have homes was particularly badly hit - the storms causing flash floods in the mountainous area behind which then formed torrents which narrowly missed houses en-route down to the sea - but washed cars into the sea as it did so. Being attacked by the sea itself whilst flash flooded rivers race down from behind probably obscured the fact that the storm itself was dropping water from above....

Add thunder, lightening and the darkness of night and you might just be getting the pictures......

The area of the Chania coastline was officially declared a disaster area.  Kolimbari suffered along with the rest, especially the area around the sea-front tavernas - where the rear of one old house - facing the sea - collapsed and considerable damage torn the front behind the Minerva hotel (see picture strip).

Add to that the 18 people reported drowned in the Chania area this year and living in Crete begins to seem a little more precarious than the travel and holiday adverts might suggest.

But perhaps the saddest news in October was not from Crete, but from the Greek Island of Corfu.

The deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning of seven year old Christianne Shepherd and her brother Robert, seven, in the chalet shared with their father Neil and his partner Ruth Beatson, who came close to sharing the same fate, was a tragedy which defies description.

A short half term break at the Louis Corcyra Beach Hotel ended so very tragically within days of their arrival - leaving inconsolable parents, family and friends - and both tour operators and hotel personnel in shock.  Police charges against those held responsible by them followed.
'Kalos Ithate Stin Kriti'  would be so completely hollow this month....

Photo Galleries

Calendar Photo Galleries:
A new one every year! The 2006gallery is, of course, on-line (LINK). Now the 2007 Calendar is as good as complete. Having already printed the first proof we can safely say that it is developing well and will be on-schedule. Links are on the home page.

Bird Galleries.
  Gallery Page 4 pending...
The first pages of our bird photograph gallery went on line in March 2006. Colin Turvey's Cretan Bird-Life photograph gallery (see February News) has now added a third page. We are now working hard on adding page 4 - another 12 of Colin's bird photographs - which will bring the number up to 48 so far. A big plus for Cretanvista.

Wild Flowers
: Over 200 different wild flowers will be on-line with our next upload.
99% of photos have been taken right here at the base of the Rodopos peninsula. We are continually working on these galleries and we will be including detailed reference information plus more photos of each specimen. We will be publishing our own book next year - but all the information will remain on line.

Cretan Countryside:
The basic page is already on-line - has been so for some time.  In the background we have been busy collecting more photographs and will very soon be publishing the first gallery. There really is some superb wild-life on Crete, and we have some outstanding photographs of the majority of wildlife - including even the 'ugliest' - which often turn into something quite beautiful. But not always ....

And More -

Anastasios Sakoulis, who contributed the magnificent gallery from his book on Cretan wildlife Moments of Cretan Nature to our site,  has also contributed 18 pictures of birds for addition to a gallery. We will attach this to Paul Smith's bird-watching page in the near future.

But that isn't all...
Anastasios Sakoulis has also given us permission (and supplied the photographs) to produce a gallery of his latest book. A book of 20 superb postcards of Cretan wildlife called Naturally... Crete

Miniature Chapels of Crete.
A first!
Klaus-Dieter Thill - author of  Minaturkapellen auf Krista, a real photo album detailing some of those enigmatic roadside shrines of Crete. Klaus has supplied photographs for this gallery which is now on-line here at Cretanvista. There will also be, of course, a review the book - which we have already. Klaus is not keen on that as the book is not publicly available, but we hope to persuade him!

He is working on some photographs of Chania and if all goes well we will be publishing these in the not too distant future.

GENERAL: There are now 13 galleries featuring aspects of Cretan life, including sunrise and sunset pictures; Souda Bay War Cemetery; and the gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis, author of  "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" (Moments of Cretan Nature); our infant gallery about house renovation; and of course our annual calendar galleries containing 60 or so pictures of north western Crete about to increase by 12 - for 2007.

Can this be you.....or yours?.. This Month - Wilf B.
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what I have missed.   Can this be yours?
