MARCH WEATHER ...
Some very nice days, but the bad weather returned with a vengeance - we used almost all our remaining logs and resolved to buy no more  before October!

Astratigos Village life...

((((((BANG!!))))))

No, it wasn't 'BOOM' , or 'Boom', or just an ordinary 'Bang'...  Nor was it that dull 'Thud' of explosives which sometimes emanates from the quarrying of stone from a hillside above Kolimbari.  No, this was a big, big, ear ringing  ((((((BANG!!))))))

There was also a smell of burnt plastic.  And was that a wisp of smoke I saw curling upwards from behind my wall-mounted modem?  With a name like mine, starting with 'Will' - I thought afterwards that 'Will 'o Wisp' would not have been appropriate.  No, this was serious.  Maybe 'Will' - as in after one is dead - was nearer the mark!

My wife Pam had materialised behind me, she had been in bed upstairs at the time of the occurrence. My mind, still reeling, replayed the flash and collapsing picture which had flicked across my monitor screen; the sudden loss of light and sound from the computer itself - the pretty flickering drive, modem and printer lights - all gone.  Just a deathly hush....

'Storm' said Pam's apparition, I came down to warn you!  Was she too late?  Was I gone to the  better place I had been promised since Sunday school.  "Dear Maureen Bailey, I didn't really mean the stink bomb in the chapel vestry, honest"...  "And the one into the pub in Wigan - where the adults from our Sunday school outing to Blackpool were imbibing after a hard day shepherding us little ones - it was a mistake, I promise...  it was just so boring sitting waiting on the coach"...

Dead? If I was I was still here.  Maybe that is what happens to the baddies, the black sheep..  Maybe you don't 'go' anywhere afterwards, maybe you are just left to carry on - being able to see and hear all, but not be seen or heard by the others, who think that you are dead!!  Listing your mistakes for ever.

"The telephones are all dead.  The fax machine is dead" said Pam - like the ghost of Christmas past, listing my disasters. Are you alright - that was the most amazingly loud bang"...

But just a minute, I thought, if I'm dead there would be no enquiries about my health.  My head (To Kephalli mou) stopped spinning.  Hey, I was still alive - and I could tell by Pam's big stick approach that she still loved me. I mean, it had to be me that struck the computer; modem; telephones; fax machine etc. etc. (but thankfully not the dog!) with lightening.  I must have generated such a vast amount of static pounding the keyboard that it just had to go somewhere!

((((((
BOOM!!))))))
)   I flinched, half expecting to be dead again, as a peal of thunder crashed directly overhead.  The computer room was still closed and shuttered.  Behind the thick Venetian stone walls it is almost impossible to hear anything outside less than Armageddon.  It is entirely possible, I promise, to hear lightening strike into the room.

The storm had not been there when I started work on the website a couple of hours earlier - there had been a hint of cloud away to the north, over the sea towards Athens - but I had failed to note the speed at which the weather was approaching.  My morning 'cuppa' had seemed much more important than the eosterics of wind speed calculation...  A mistake which might well have made that cup of tea become the equivalent of the last supper. Or at least boil the tea!

The OTE telephone engineer who arrived later admired the scorch marks on the wall behind the modem - 'Orea' (fine) he enthused admiringly - 'Poli orea'.  Very fine!  Indeed....  He replaced the modem and tested the lines - all OK. Good.  He was preparing to leave - much to our surprise when we managed to break the Greek language barrier (though he spoke perfect English) and make him believe that our extensions were also dead.  He knew my sense of humour - "I thought that you were joking"!!  The phones were repaired.

"Is this where the lightening stuck"?  The wonderment in the voice of our InterAmerican insurance company agent was obvious - hushed, almost reverent, as if viewing the inside of a great Cathedral.  "Right here, in this room"?..  "Right here" I said cautiously, not wanting to give redirections to a passing bolt, "Right here"...

I had once before - whilst still at primary school - almost been struck by a bolt which hit the playground only feet away.  I am now wearing wellies, rubber gloves and apron - and a crash hat with a lightening conductor on top.

"The best way to avoid injury by lightening", a recent TV documentary advised, "is to douse the outside with water"!!!..................

Site News.
All changing...
You probably already know that we use the 'Tesco' principle of offering several different spellings of our site name. So that people mis-typing with 19 fingers or who have mislaid their reading glasses can still find us ok.  We also use different ISP's and domain endings to ensure continuous access.

Try it: www.cretanvistas.co.uk really is no different to www.cretanvista.gr - except that you receive them from different parts of the world.  However, spill your coffee on your cables or get struck by lightening and there really is nothing we can do...

Cretan Vista Calendars.
The 2005 calendar picture gallery went on line as planned by 18th February.  Being the creator I hesitate to claim accolades, since the real kudos belong to the people who created the reality - builders to barrel-makers.  The 2004 calendar - Old Vehicles - is pending.

Books & Good Reading.
Still growing rapidly and is, we hope, much easier to navigate now that the new introductory pages are open.  Hopefully our new style of presentation will make selection of books and navigation in this area of the site much, much easier. The latest addition should please wild flower enthusiasts - 'Wild Flowers of the Mediterranean' by David Burnie. Essential reading for anyone who intending to seek wild flowers on Crete:-

1.Wild Flowers of the Mediterranean.

The People... The profiles...  Every book review has an introductory paragraph about the author/s. We have decided to go a little further and where possible, include profiles of not only these talented authors but also, where we can, of people behind them.  Good examples are  'Patouchas' - Ioannis Kondylakis  (Read the review) and 'Who Pays The Ferryman' - Michael J. Bird - (Read the  review) there is a whole tribute website to Michael Bird.  These profiles will be attached to relevant the book reviews.

Photo Galleries. (Homepage links).
The 2005 Calendar gallery
is of course already on-line, (Cretan Vista calendars - link above).  The 2004 Calendar - a specialist product featuring old cars, buses and lorries is moving forward, although not many of the vehicles featured are moving at all..  Wild Flowers: A further two pages of the flower galleries (Gallery pages 7 & 8), another 24 wild-flowers since the last news - making 96 different flowers. The next two pages are en-route. We have more than 3,500 flower photographs in our databases.  The initial flower galleries will become an on-line book - right here on site, very printer friendly - for personal use only.  The galleries of our Athens visit at Christmas and New Year will follow in a couple of months..

We now have 13 galleries featuring several aspects of Cretan life. Including a very nice gallery of sunrise and sunset pictures; the Souda Bay War Cemetery; and a gallery of magnificent wild-life pictures by Anastasios Sakoulis, author of  "Stigmotipa Tis Kritikis Freesis" - (Links below - bottom right column); our infant gallery about house renovation; and of course our annual calendar galleries containing 60 or so pictures of north western Crete. Some of them good!

A total of around 200 gallery quality photographs of Crete, mostly backed with relevant information.  Have a look.  All our  site photographs (more than 800 online in all) are the result of much hard work and we hope are of interest to our visitors.  We know that some of the general pictures can be replaced with better ones - watch this space....

There are of course many other developments going on all the time - including new ones which I continue to bite my tongue about rather than reveal until opening day.

Are we listening, do we hear?
We are and we do.  The continuously increasing numbers of visitors and complimentary e-mails seem to show that our visitors - 21,000 plus individual visits in our best month last year - appreciate our efforts.

Earthquakes. Wobbling Still.....

Earthquake activity in Greece continues as usual. Three reports of note for March:-

11 Mar:  4.2 Richter Scale  12.30pm. Rafina. The epicenter was located to the east, 25Km from Athens.
                                                           Link to story.

16 Mar:  4.2 Richter Scale  07.01am. Samos. A second shock immediately following the initial 'quake at hit at 7.02 and measured 4.4 Richter Scale.

As usual no damage or injuries were reported.
                                                            Link to story.

Earthquakes are a common feature of life  in Greece and rarely cause any damage. The problem is that the ones that do are unpredictable. However, at least one professor believes that there will be at least 4 major quakes in the future.

There has of course been much debate about the possibility of tsunamis occurring in earthquake prone Greece.  The general consensus is.... Not before 2050!

A Little Extra news...
In many ways, one thing we really do need here on Crete is a cheap means of transport.  At the present time our own suggestions for a day in Athens could easily see people around 100 GB pounds, per person, worse off.  'plane or boat tickets, a coffee (or two) at the airport, a meal in Athens etc. etc.  And the main culprits are the transport costs - Athens itself is not terribly expensive.

The main culprit of the transport cost is the captive audience - you and I - anyone who wants to walk about on a different Island.  Back packing is all very well but you will find that it has to stop at the water!

Quite apart from the airlines, our ferry operators want to increase their fares by at least 10 -15% - and they are not, even now, really competing with the airlines.  Except that they take much longer to get anywhere... Which can be nice!

Well, there may be light on the horizon (or not) with GB Airways (a BA subsidiary) about to fly twice a week from London - Iraklion.  Maybe others will follow. Easyjet - (EasyCrete)?   Ryanair? - My grandmother was Irish!

In the News...

Hold on, here come the cavalry....
Greek prison guards are just a little worried about their weaponry.  Apparently, their most modern pistols date from around 1935. Their most antiquated were the same as those used by the US cavalry in1911. Experts have warned against use.                                Link to Story.

Never on a Sunday...Athens..
Is Athens a city that never sleeps?  It looked fairly empty after 1am last time I was there, but then everything has to change..                                            Link to Story.

El Greco painting goes on display...Herakalion..
The 16th century painting 'The Baptism of Christ' by Domenikos Theotocopoulos - El Greco - famed artist and son of Crete, is on display at the Historical Museum of Crete in Iraklion (Heraklion).  If you are on holiday in the area try to have it a look, it isn't the only El Greco they have...                                                  Link to story.

Barrage Balloons back in Fashion on Crete..
Nikos Kazantzakis Airport in Iraklion was the scene of 10 huge balloons reported to be rising same 50 meters into the air - blocking the flight path, on March 10th. Put there by protesting residents who want the airport to be moved on safety grounds.  If you have ever landed or been below an aircraft near the airport you will know what they mean..

Rio-Antirio Bridge Problems... Open again...
Fire broke out in a suspension cable on 27th January, followed by the cable snapping and the bridge been taken out of use whilst the cause was investigated. The bridge was repaired and fully opened again on March 7th.                                                      Link to story.

40 year- old dam plan stirs controversy on Crete. A plan to finally build a new dam serving the population of Iraklion (Heraklion) has stirred major controversy regarding the high environmental costs; violation of EU laws; and detrimental effects on tourism without any guarantee that it will solve the water supply problems it is aimed at. Link to story.

Stagnating tourism worries Greece...
Greece, 'Land of the Gods' is facing increasing competition from Turkey, new EEC members and in fact anywhere which can lure tourists. Economic factors and early closure of some facilities are cited, but is it just the message that isn't getting across?

And More Marbles....
Is Tony Blair, British prime minister, aware, I wonder, of the latest Greek action against the illegal possession of Parthenon Marble. The newspaper Ekathimerini reported  on March 17th the arrest of a visiting Canadian teenager who  was allegedly attempting to steal a what must have been a very small piece of the Acropolis. If she is taken to court and convicted what could happen to the possessor of whole sculptures?  Give 'em back Tony, think of the votes!!

Well, that's about it for now.....

But very much behind time.  If you read the Astratigos Village Life feature (middle column above) you will already know my excuse. Getting back into business following the devastation of our main computer, modem, fax, telephones etc, as well as getting on with life, was not easy...  Especially when dressed in my new lightening proof uniform (
wellies, rubber gloves and apron - crash hat with a lightening conductor on top)!

We do of course have backup, but it is not as easy to use as the equipment we use every day normally.  OTE - the Greek telecoms company, were absolutely fantastic and we don't blame their engineer for thinking that there was no further problem after his checked repairs. We were smiling and it was April 1st next day!!

Likewise, Powersystems of Chania were their usual magnificent selves.  Although they had to declare our fax machine dead, it took them only a few days to restore our computer.  The problem for us was that we had to restore some of our own programs - it did take time.  We also lost a monitor - beyond repair.

We were also in the middle of changing one of our Greek ISP's at the time of the lightening strike, so Cretanvista.gr sat awaiting updates for longer than is fair to visitors. But we are here in the light at the end of our tunnel. Please remember, if there seems a problem with cretanvista.gr just go to cretanvistas.gr - or vice versa. Whichever way round it is your second choice will work - I promise. Strike me with lightening if it doesn't....

E-Mail Requests..
I receive some brilliant e-mails - really - and they are very welcome.  But sometimes there is no acknowledgement that our answer has been received.  We don't mind, but worry occasionally that someone may not have received an answer from us and think the worse of us!  We will ALWAYS reply to e-mail so please, if you have mailed us and not received an answer - resend your mail - we didn't get it or have somehow overlooked it.
Our response time is usually within 48 hours.

Personal Information..
We have been asked in the past to help locate people. We would love to be able to assist but regret that are unable to do this.  There is fuller comment in previous issues of CV News.

Questions and Answers..
Quite a lot of questions are received here at  Cretanvista and, as with e-mails and other forms of communication, we do our best to supply valid answers.  We never respond "Off the Top of our Heads" but always research the answer - even if we already have one (things change) before passing the information on.  We provide links to appropriate alternative sources where we have them.  The answers are given with the proviso that recipients are responsible for any action taken by them.

Guest Book.  E-mail links are accepted.  Website URL, Bulletin board and chat-room style links are not.  Website links are removed automatically to prevent inclusion of sites without agreement.

Book Reviews.
Because each book review is original - we steal nothing from the book covers or the reviews of others - it takes a little longer to deal with each.  No point our reviewing the reviews when what readers really want to know about is the content!

The Cretan Vista Calendar Photos - Birds.
We trying to build a specialist calendar of birds - whilst we are building our own library photographs - contributions are always welcome. They will always be acknowledged and copyright will remain your own.
(Please email us before sending pictures).

Bird Watchers.
Paul Smiths' bird watching diary page remains very popular and hopefully Paul is well into his April 2005 diary.  We are sincerely indebted to visitors who have supplied photographs.  We will be displaying these in CVNews, please don't lose heart. Hopefully we will receive enough to start a gallery of Cretan sightings.

Can this be you.....or yours?
Every so often when I am out and about taking photographs I come across someone who could be you - or something which could be yours (or theirs!!).  Maybe passing in the opposite direction on a full tandem bicycle (yes, that happened); an unattended car with foreign plates; something which catches my eye and leaves me not knowing......... Either there was no one to ask or they were moving too quickly!  I thought that perhaps site visitors might like to see or be able to help identify one or two 'unknowns' which have left me wondering who, or what, I have missed.   Is this yours?
